Hosta 'Blue Angel' is a true giant among hostas, growing 36 to 48 inches tall and wide. Its massive, heart-shaped leaves boast a stunning blue tint, heavy texture, and softly rippled edges, making it a standout in any shaded garden. From early to late summer, 48-inch scapes rise above the foliage, showcasing bell-shaped flowers in lavender to white that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. These blooms are also ideal for adding charm to fresh floral arrangements.
A Hosta hybrid, commonly called plantain lily, 'Blue Angel' is a long-lived perennial suitable for Zones 3-9. With its symmetrical, mounding habit, it establishes quickly but takes time to achieve its full grandeur, returning larger and more vibrant each year. Whether planted en masse for a dramatic backdrop or arranged in flowing drifts, 'Blue Angel' brings texture and movement to the landscape. It's also a versatile choice for borders, foundations, and containers, and it's especially effective for concealing fading bulb foliage in spring. Its tolerance for air pollution makes it a great choice for urban gardens.
Easy to grow and low maintenance, 'Blue Angel' thrives in dappled to full shade with rich, well-draining soil. Consistent watering is essential to keep its lush foliage healthy, and an annual application of slow-release fertilizer in spring enhances its impressive growth.
Plant 'Blue Angel' hosta roots in spring, spacing them 36 to 48 inches apart and planting them 1½ to 2 inches deep for a robust and thriving display.
