All the Details You Need to Know
The Story Behind This Plant
The **Philodendron Calkins Gold** is a beautiful hybrid variety prized for its stable and vibrant coloration. It belongs to the Araceae family, native to the tropical Americas. In their natural habitat, these types of Philodendrons are often hemiepiphytes, meaning they start life on the forest floor and climb up trees toward the canopy light. This natural climbing instinct is why they respond so well to a moss pole in your home, often producing larger leaves as they climb!
How to Keep It Happy
Keeping the Calkins Gold vibrant is all about finding the right balance of light and water.
- **Light:** Bright, indirect light is crucial! Too little light will cause the beautiful golden variegation to fade to green. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
- **Water:** Allow the top 30-50% of the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Philodendrons hate having "soggy feet," so ensure good drainage.
- **Soil:** Use a chunky, airy, well-draining "aroid mix." Adding perlite and orchid bark to standard potting soil helps ensure roots get the oxygen they need.
- **Humidity:** While it survives in average household humidity, it thrives in higher humidity (around 60%). Misting or a pebble tray can help during dry winters.
- **Support:** Being a climber at heart, providing a moss pole or trellis will encourage faster growth and larger, more mature foliage.
What to Do About Pests
Philodendrons are generally tough, but stress can occasionally invite pests. Regular inspections are key.
- **Spider Mites:** Look for tiny webs and fine stippling on the leaves, especially if the air is dry. Our Guide
- **Mealybugs:** These appear as small, white cottony masses tucked into leaf axils or under leaves. Our Guide
- **Thrips:** Tiny, slender insects that cause silvery or bronze streaks on foliage. Isolate and treat immediately if spotted.
