Don't let its utilitarian reputation fool you; 'Peredovik' is an undeniably cute and cheery addition to the garden. Standing at a manageable two to five feet tall, these Russian heirlooms bring a classic, sunny presence that delights humans and pollinators alike. However, their true superpower lies in the harvest. This variety produces the famous "black oil" seeds—nutrient-dense, high-calorie packets of energy that are far meatier than standard striped snacking seeds.
Because these black seeds have thinner shells, they are an accessible feast for smaller songbirds like finches and cardinals, providing essential fuel for the cold months. Beyond the bird feeder, the plants are excellent soil stewards. Their strong taproots help aerate the earth, and if left standing through winter, the sturdy stalks offer critical shelter for wildlife while the remaining seeds keep your garden bustling with life.
