All the Details You Need to Know
The Story Behind This Plant
The **Pothos 'Jade'** is a cultivated variety of *Epipremnum aureum*, a climbing vine native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. In the wild, Pothos climbs trees using aerial roots, and its leaves can grow dramatically large. Its common name, Pothos, comes from the genus *Pothos*, which it was once classified under. The 'Jade' variety is selected specifically for its rich, solid green colouration (lacking the yellow of the 'Golden' Pothos), giving it a dark, lush, and classic tropical appearance that fits beautifully into any decor style.
How to Keep It Happy
The Pothos 'Jade' is famously easygoing, but a few simple rules will ensure rapid, lush growth:
- **Light:** Tolerates low to medium light, but thrives and grows fastest in **bright, indirect light**. Avoid harsh, direct sun which can burn the leaves. Note: Non-variegated Pothos like the 'Jade' handle lower light better than their variegated cousins.
- **Water:** Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. The leaves will start to slightly curl or droop when thirsty—this is your signal! Overwatering is the biggest risk.
- **Humidity:** Tolerates average household humidity well, though it appreciates higher humidity (like most tropicals).
- **Soil:** Use a standard, well-draining indoor potting mix.
- **Temperature:** Maintain warm, stable temperatures, ideally between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Protect it from cold drafts.
- **Feeding:** Feed once a month during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer.
What to Do About Pests
Pothos are hardy against most pests, but it’s always wise to inspect regularly.
If you happen to spot any of these, check out our guides for quick help:
- **Mealybugs:** Small, cotton-like spots in leaf axils or along stems. Our Guide
- **Spider Mites:** Look for tiny webs and speckling on the underside of leaves, common in dry air. Our Guide
- **Fungus Gnats:** Small flying insects usually a sign of soil staying too wet. Our Guide (Placeholder)
