The Sempervivum ‘Appletini’ is a vibrant and compact mat-forming succulent known for its green pointed leaves with deep red tips. As a member of the Hens and Chicks group, this cold-hardy rosette-forming plant adds refreshing color to rock gardens, patio containers, green roofs, and alpine landscapes. Its cheerful name reflects its lively, fruity hues that are especially eye-catching during spring and fall.

Native to Europe’s mountainous regions, including the Alps and Carpathians, it is also known as the Chick charms appletini.

It forms attractive, evergreen rosettes, typically 5 inches wide at maturity.

The leaves are pointed and fleshy with a waxy coating that helps retain moisture, and their bright chartreuse to lime-green color intensifies in cooler weather, often developing hints of red at the leaf tips.

Offsets, or “chicks,” grow around the mother rosette, gradually forming a dense, spreading mat that looks especially striking when grouped together.

Sempervivum appletini flowers bloom in the summer, when mature rosettes may produce clusters of pinkish-red, star-shaped flowers on a tall central stalk.

As with all Sempervivum, opens in a new tab, the flowering rosette will die after blooming—a process known as being monocarpic—but it leaves behind plenty of offsets to continue the display. The blooms also attract pollinators like bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies, adding a dynamic touch of life to the garden.

Indoors, keep it in a bright spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily and maintain temperatures between 60–75°F.

Outdoors, it’s hardy in USDA Zones 3–9 and performs best in full sun to light shade, depending on your climate.

The Chick charms plant is easy to care for and requires little maintenance.

It thrives in a well-drained  succulent mix amended with sand or perlite is ideal.

Water deeply but only when the soil is completely dry, as it is highly drought-tolerant and susceptible to rot if overwatered. Fertilizing isn’t usually necessary, but a diluted, low-nitrogen fertilizer in spring can give it a gentle boost. Minimal pruning is needed—simply remove dead leaves or flower stalks as they appear.

Like most Sempervivum species, this Sempervivum chick charms appletini is considered non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a safe addition to family gardens, patios, or indoor windowsills. It is also resistant to deer and rabbits.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Sempervivum ‘Appletini’ is a delightful, hardy succulent that offers bold, green tones year-round and thrives with minimal care. Its combination of cold-hardiness, low water needs, and colorful, textural appeal makes it an ideal choice for sustainable landscapes and creative container designs. Whether planted alone in a decorative pot or grouped with other Sempervivum varieties for a vibrant color contrast, it brings a pop of life to any sunny space. Its durability, charming name, and cheerful appearance have secured its place as a must-have in any drought-tolerant or alpine-themed garden. Order your very own chick charms for sale today!

Good sunscreen but be careful around your eyes
I’m trying to get better at using sunscreen more consistently, so I’ve been on the hunt for a while for the perfect formula (ideally SPF 100, not greasy, and would work well under makeup for when I’m both outdoors and wearing a full beat). I liked that this seemed to tick off all my boxes while also being affordable because if I’m going to use it frequently, I want to rest easy knowing that it won’t break the bank. I also vaguely remember using this sunscreen (or at least this brand) many years ago with no issues, so figured it’d be worth going back to. I normally use three thick finger lines of sunscreen for my face, neck, and ears, regardless of spf number, because if I’m going to go outside I’m not taking any risks. (Usually the rule of thumb is two fingers.) Also depending on what I’m doing and how long I plan on being outside, I try to also take the bottle with me so I can reapply. Anyway, I test it out, wear it, feels good. Takes a little while for it to feel relatively dry as advertised, but once it dries it’s tolerable. By the end of the day you might forget you still have it on your skin (aside from maybe the slight sunscreen smell, nothing terrible). Washed it off in the shower as usual. Most of my face still looks perfectly fine, but my undereyes are now red! (Or at least one of them, for some reason my right undereye is more sensitive than the left.) From what I’ve read online so far, it might be a sensitivity to avobenzone, one of the active ingredients. Very baffled with what to do because everyone says to use sunscreen around your eyes because of aging and sunburn, but does that mean I have to get used to my eyes turning red just to get that protection? I already wear pretty big sunglasses too, so it’s not like they’re completely exposed. Will have to experiment some more and/or look at alternatives.

Good, inexpensive sunscreen
I have always loved Neutrogena products especially their sunscreen. It used to be hard to get SPF over 30 and now they have it up to 100. I haven't burned using Neutrogena, haven't had any skin issues and it's pretty inexpensive. Would recommend.

Lightweight, Non-Greasy & Perfect for Daily Sun Protection
I absolutely loved the Ultra Sheer Invisible Gel Face Sunscreen! It absorbs so quickly into the skin and leaves no greasy or heavy feeling behind. The lightweight gel texture feels comfortable throughout the day, and I love how it layers well under makeup. Most importantly, it makes me feel protected from the sun while keeping my skin looking fresh and smooth. Definitely a sunscreen I’ll keep reaching for!

Matte comfortable facial sunscreen
This is a great sunscreen! The texture is kind of odd at first but it dries down nicely and is the only facial sunscreen I have found that is NOT shiny or greasy looking! Most facial sunscreens will advertise no white cast and being "dewy," but I find them to make my face so shiny and greasy looking, especially because I also use a moisturizer. This one is great and does not add any shine to my face.
