Althea, more commonly known as the Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus), is a multi-stemmed shrub that typically grows upright with a vase-shaped or rounded habit. It features attractive green foliage that may turn yellow in fall before dropping. The most notable feature of Althea is its large, showy flowers, which resemble hibiscus blooms. These flowers come in a variety of colors, including white, pink, purple, and blue often with a contrasting throat. They bloom profusely from mid- to late summer and continue into fall, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. This variety of rose is highly sought after due to its thornless nature! It can add color to your backyard without the worry of children or pets getting cut by thorns.

Scientific Name Hibiscus syriacus
Foliage: Deciduous

Leaves: Medium green, often three-lobed, and have a "toothed" edge. They are usually one of the last plants to leaf out in the spring (don't worry if it looks dead in April!) Will lose its leaves in the winter.

Flowers: Large, trumpet-shaped flowers (2–4 inches wide) come in shades of white, pink, red, purple, or blue, often with a contrasting "eye" in the center.

Capsules: Dull green pods during the growing season and mature into a papery, grayish-brown color in the fall. They are egg shaped and about 0.75 to 1 inch long. They split open along 5 seams and release the seeds in the winter.

Seeds: Located in the capsules and are medium, flat, kidney shaped. Dark brown to dull black in color. Known for having a distinctive ring of fine, brownish-tan hairs on the edges.

Canes: Young canes are light grayish-green and are thin and flexible. Mature canes turn smooth, light ash-ray to dark gray-brown. The canes have no thorns!

Lifespan: Perennial The average lifespan of is 20 to 30 years. A well-maintained Rose of Sharon can sometimes survive up to 40 years!
Mature Height 8-12 feet
Mature Width (Spread) 6-10 feet
Growth Rate Moderate (typically 1-2 feet per year)
USDA Zone Zone 5-9

PLANT CARE & CHARACTERISTICS

Light Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade. It blooms most prolifically in full sun (6+ hours). In hotter climates (Zone 9), it appreciates a little afternoon shade to keep the flowers from wilting.

Water Requirements: Moderate. It prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. While it is somewhat tolerant of wet soil, it does not like to sit in a swamp.

Drought Resistance: Moderate. Once established, it can handle short dry spells, but its flowering will be significantly reduced, and it may drop flower buds if it becomes too thirsty. Althea benefits from regular watering during dry periods, especially in hot weather.

Soil Type: Adaptable. It thrives in rich, loamy soil but is quite tolerant of various types, including clay and sandy soils, as long as they drain well. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Adding organic matter, such as compost, to the soil can improve its fertility and drainage.

Deer Resistance: Moderate. Deer may eat the flower buds or young leaves, so it may need protection if you have a high deer population.

PEST/DISEASE RESISTANCE

Pest/Disease Resistance
Verticillium Wilt: Soil borne fungal disease that kills many other ornamental trees and shrubs.  High
Aphids: Insects that suck sap, causing distorted leaf growth. They also create a sticky fluid called honeydew, which can attract ants and lead to black sooty mold.  Low
Leaf Spots & Blights: Occasional cosmetic spotting occurs during humid, rainy spells, but it rarely threatens the plant's survival. Moderate
Japanese Beetles: Feed heavily on the blooms and skeletonize the foliage during mid-to-late summer.  Low
Canker: On older or poorly pruned specimens, fungal cankers can occasionally develop on the main trunks and branches, causing localized dieback. Moderate
Rust (Cerotelium malvicola): A fungus causes yellow-brown pustules on the surfaces of the leaves and premature leaf drop. Regular cleanup and leaf inspection easily manages it.  Moderate
Root Rot: High vulnerability to waterlogged or stagnant soils; roots easily suffocate, leading to leaf drop and rot.  Low

POLLINATION

Rose of Sharon features a highly distinctive, fused central structure known as a staminal column. Because both male and female structures are on the same flower, Rose of Sharon is physically capable of self-pollination, but it is primarily designed for cross-pollination facilitated by insects (entomophily).

  • The Female Structure (Pistil): Protruding straight out from the very tip of that same column is the style, which splits into five distinct, rounded stigmas.
  • The Male Structure (Stamen): The central white-to-cream column is packed with dozens of small anthers that shed large amounts of heavy, sticky, cream-colored pollen.

The pollen grains of the Rose of Sharon are exceptionally large, heavy, and covered in tiny spines. Because it isn't light or powdery, it cannot be carried by the wind. It requires heavy-duty pollinators to move it. The primary pollinators are bumblebees, honeybees, and hummingbirds.

Common varieties of Rose of Sharon are notorious for producing a massive amount of seeds that sprout everywhere in the garden. If you want to avoid weeding out hundreds of "babies," look for sterile cultivars such as the 'Chiffon' series or the 'Satin' series (e.g., 'Blue Satin'), which produce few to no seeds.

PRUNING SUMMARY

Pruning Aspect Ideal Timing Step-by-Step Actions
Annual Maintenance: Routine shaping, improving airflow, and cleaning up winter damage. Late Winter / Early Spring (Late Feb–March, before buds break) Cut out the 3 D's: any Dead, Damaged, or Diseased canes down to their base. Remove weak, spindly, or crossing branches from the center to maximize light penetration. To get fewer but much larger blooms, cut the previous year's stems back to leave just 2–3 buds.
Tree Training: Developing a formal, single-trunk "patio tree" shape instead of a wide bush. Late Winter / Early Spring (Ongoing during early years of growth) Select the single straightest, most vigorous cane to serve as your central trunk. Prune all other competing ground canes completely down to the dirt. Gradually remove lower side branches up the bottom third to half of the main trunk as it grows. Prune away ground suckers every spring.
Deadheading: Eliminating seed pods to prevent aggressive self-seeding and garden weeds. Late Summer / Early Autumn (Right after blooms fade) Snip or snap off spent flowers before the green, 5-valved capsules turn brown and split open.
Rejuvenation (Renewal): Revitalizing old, bare-bottomed, or declining shrubs reaching the end of their lifespan. Late Winter / Early Spring (Spread sequentially over 3 years) Year 1: Cut the oldest, thickest one-third of the main trunks down to 6–12 inches from the ground. Year 2: Cut half of the remaining old trunks (another third of the original total) down to the base. Year 3: Cut the final original old trunks down, leaving a fully renewed, high-producing root system.

Surprisingly Great!
Color: Black
I’m writing this review because I am actually Overly satisfied with this product. There are many high quality brands that have similar “water flossers” with high price tags. The price on this was relatively inexpensive so I decided to try it knowing Amazon’s great return policy. I’ve had it for just over a week and I’m borderline addicted to how good my teeth feel after using this along with normal brushing and mouthwash. It’s a legit “just left the dentist feeling” I can say for the price it is a good value and works great. This comes with a few extra standard heads, a specialized head with small brush for braces and a tongue scraper. I primarily use the standard head which is just a small jet that allows you to shoot the water stream between your teeth. I also have used the tongue scraper just to try it and it’s not bad. Allows you to scrape your tongue while a stream of water cleans and rinses. Anyone who flosses regularly knows it sucks and can be gross. Let’s face it, you are ripping old food out of your teeth. It’s a necessary evil for a healthy mouth. I used the small plastic floss picks for a while and they do a decent job. Dental hygienists usually argue it’s not the same but I think it’s better than not flossing at all. Now my routine is a quick floss with the floss picks followed by this water flosser - and it’s fantastic. The unit is well made and has a few different modes. I stick to the standard mode which is a constant jet of water. It’s aggressive and can be intimidating at first so here are some tips I think will help: 1. I use slightly warm water. Cold water blasted at your teeth is not fun. Warm water is a way better experience. The reservoir is easy to fill right from the sink. 2. It will take a couple tries to figure exactly how to use it. If you just hit the power button it will jet water everywhere before you get it in your mouth. My suggestion is put it in your mouth, aim the head between your teeth, close your mouth and then hit the power button. Once it starts you just move it from tooth to tooth between your teeth. Once you get the hang of it it’s great. I do my top teeth, spit out, then do the bottom row and spit out. I follow it up with brushing and mouthwash. Literally the fresh from the dentist feeling. 3. The reservoir is small so it runs out quickly but it’s so easy to refill I wouldn’t call it an issue. If it were larger it would be bulky and the other brands that have a big tank and hose are just too much to deal with. After a week of using I can quickly do all my teeth with one fill. I usually do a second round as well because im addicted. 4. Be careful of turning it on when it’s not in your mouth. The jet is strong and could shoot you in the eye. Not joking. 5. It may be awkward at first but once you get used to doing it you get better at it and it’s much easier. The power button is your friend. I turn it on and off to control the jetting to get more time out of the reservoir and to prevent spraying everywhere. 6. It has a USB charger and it works well. It seems to go almost a week without charging and I use twice a day sometimes - because I’m addicted. Overall it’s great value for the low price. I’m Not sure how long it will last but I would definitely get another one if this one failed.

Long-Term Review – Still Works Like New After Months of Daily Use
Color: Black, Color: Black
I purchased the Nicwell Water Dental Flosser in June 2024, and I’ve been using it consistently ever since. I wanted to wait before reviewing so I could speak to durability and battery life — and I’m glad I did. Performance: This flosser does a very thorough job cleaning between teeth and along the gumline. It removes debris that traditional string floss sometimes misses and leaves my mouth feeling noticeably fresher. The pressure is strong enough to deep clean but not uncomfortable. Modes & Usability: The different modes are useful depending on how sensitive your gums feel. Switching between them is simple, and the controls are straightforward. It’s lightweight and easy to handle, even in the shower. Battery Life (Very Impressive): One of the standout features is the battery. Months later, it still holds a charge just like it did when I first bought it. I don’t have to recharge it often, and charging is quick and easy. Build Quality: The unit feels solid and well-made. I haven’t experienced leaks, power issues, or performance decline. It still operates like new. Who It’s Great For: • Anyone who struggles with traditional floss • People with sensitive gums • Those wanting a portable option for travel • Anyone looking to upgrade their oral hygiene routine I haven’t had any problems with it, and it’s been consistent since day one. For the price and quality, I think it’s a great investment in daily dental care. Highly recommend.

Some drawbacks but overall Good- BUY SEPARATE CHARGING CORD
Color: Black
I have had this for about a week now and here are my takes so far: You have to order the charging cord separately which is weird, but I was able to get out delivered quickly with Amazon Prime so just know to do this when you order. Pros: The price! The water tank is surprisingly large compared to WaterPik and you can definitely use it for longer to clean because of this. There are lots of different options for water strength and different tips that come with the device In the first week it has worked fine. Cons: It is a little too easy to accidentally hit a button and change the water pulse when you are holding it- I have to be very conscious of where my hand is so I don’t get the super strong flow (it is very strong) The little door where you add water to the tank is at the bottom and seems like out would be easy to knock it off accidentally when open. I did do this once but nothing broke so I was able to snap it back on easily. I dropped the device about six inches into my sink (all of these devices can be slippery) and the tank got nudged off, but I was able to easily re-attach it so no real problems there. There is a little detached plug you use to cover the charging connection and it seems like it would be so easy to lose the little thing. 🤞🏼 OVERALL: I would buy again as overall it works well, and the last WaterPik I bought died after 2 weeks (so I don’t trust those anymore). Just be mindful of how you hold it, and watch out for the little tank door and the little rubber charging cover!

2+ Years of Use and Still Going Strong!
Color: Black
I’ve had this Nicwell Cordless Water Flosser since July 2023, and it has been incredibly reliable. After nearly two years of daily use, I’ve never had any battery issues or pressure problems, which is usually the first thing to go on these portable units. Why it’s been a great buy: Dependable Power: The 1400-1800 pulses per minute feel just as strong today as they did on day one. It’s perfect for getting deep between teeth and along the gumline. Long Battery Life: Even after two years, the rechargeable lithium battery holds a charge for a long time. I don't find myself constantly reaching for the charging cable. Truly Portable: It’s lightweight and easy to pack for trips, yet it performs like a full-sized countertop model. 4 Versatile Modes: The "Clean" and "Custom" modes are my favorites for a thorough deep clean. If you want a water flosser that actually lasts more than a few months, this is the one. It’s durable, consistent, and well worth the investment!

Replaced after emailing Nicwell customer service….Thank you Nicwell
Color: White
For the first month, the water flosser was everything I had hoped for. It transformed my nightly routine into a refreshing experience, and I felt a sense of accomplishment knowing I was taking great care of my teeth. Friends and family noticed my radiant smile, and I couldn’t help but brag about her new gadget. However, just as I was settling into my routine, disaster struck. One evening, as I prepared to floss, the water flosser sputtered and then went silent. Confused, I checked the power source and the water reservoir, but nothing seemed to work. Panic set in as I realized that my beloved device had only lasted four months. Determined to resolve the issue, I dug out the warranty card and dialed the customer service number. After navigating through a series of automated prompts, she finally reached a representative. “Thank you for calling. How can I assist you today?” the representative asked cheerfully. “I’m having trouble with my water flosser. It stopped working after just four months,” I explained, his voice tinged with frustration. “I’m sorry to hear that,” the representative replied. “Can I have your order number, please?” After a few moments of searching, the representative returned with a frown in their voice. “I see that your purchase was made four months ago. Unfortunately, our return policy only covers the first 30 days. I’m afraid we can’t offer a replacement.” I felt my heart sink. “But it’s a defective product! I thought warranties covered issues like this.” “I understand your frustration, but the policy is quite strict,” the representative said, their tone now more formal. “You might consider contacting the manufacturer directly, but I can’t guarantee they’ll be able to help.” Feeling defeated, I thanked the representative and hung up the phone. I couldn’t believe that a product I had trusted and loved had failed me so quickly, and the customer service I had hoped would assist me had only added to my disappointment. In the days that followed, I found myself reflecting on her experience. I realized that while the water flosser had been a great tool, the lack of support when it mattered most had left me feeling disheartened. I returned to traditional flossing, albeit with a newfound appreciation for the simplicity of it. Though the water flosser was gone, I learned a valuable lesson about the importance of understanding return policies and the risks of relying too heavily on technology. And while I might eventually try another model, I would always remember to read the fine print and keep my expectations in check. However, after reflecting on my situation, I decided to reach out via email to the company. To my surprise, they responded promptly and offered to replace the flosser at no cost. This gesture restored my faith in the brand and showed me that they genuinely care about their customers. I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for replacing my water flosser after just a few short email exchanges. Your prompt and helpful response made a significant difference in my experience, and I truly appreciate your commitment to customer satisfaction. The water flosser has been a fantastic addition to my dental care routine, and I’m thrilled to have a replacement that I can rely on. Thank you once again for your excellent service and support!
