Anthurium Hookeri Black Dragon – A Rare, Exotic Jewel with Dark Green Foliage
The Anthurium Hookeri Black Dragon is a stunning and rare bird’s nest Anthurium, known for its thick, dark green, almost black leaves with a glossy, leathery texture. This unique variety is perfect for plant collectors who love bold, sculptural plants with an otherworldly appearance.
Wild Texture Dossier
A bold bird’s-nest anthurium with heavy, crocodile-skin corrugation and a deep, inky green ground. ‘Black Dragon’ holds an upright, self-supporting crown that reads architectural and rugged—perfect when you want foliage with attitude.
Spec Highlights
- Botanical: Anthurium hookeri ‘Black Dragon’ (bird’s-nest type)
- Habit: upright rosette; stout petioles; broad, paddle-like blades
- Surface: bullate (heavily pebbled) texture; satin-to-matte finish; thick leaf substance
- Interior scale: commonly ~45–80 cm (18–31 in) with steady routines
- Pet guidance: display out of nibbling reach
Placement Playbook
- Stands out on pedestals or low consoles—let the leaf texture catch side light.
- Pairs beautifully with smooth, matte planters; contrast with fine-leaf aroids for a curated mix.
- Works as a grounding piece among brighter variegates.
Light & Climate
- Illumination: diffused daylight or gentled morning rays; screen harsh midday sun to protect the bullate surface.
- Humidity: comfortable room moisture around 55–70% RH with mild airflow.
- Temperature: 20–29 °C (68–85 °F); keep away from cold drafts for crisp edges.
Water & Substrate
- Hydration rhythm: water when the top layer feels dry to the touch; drench, then drain completely—no standing water.
- Root zone: open, fast-draining blend—orchid bark + pumice/coarse perlite + coco chips; a light sphagnum accent for buffering.
- Crown sits slightly high in the mix to discourage basal wetness.
Feeding & Upkeep
- Nutrition: balanced fertilizer at ¼–½ strength during active growth; ease off as days cool.
- Grooming: dust leaves occasionally so the sculpted texture reads clean.
- Orientation: quarter-turn the planter every couple of weeks for even presentation.
Set-In Notes
Begin in cushioned light and ramp brightness gradually over 10–14 days. New flushes typically show the sharpest corrugation and richest dark tone.
