The African Spear is a sculptural succulent that brings bold, architectural beauty to any Cape Town home or garden. Its upright, cylindrical leaves rise like green spears, often banded with subtle grey-green markings, creating a striking modern look. Flowering is rare but enchanting: in late summer to early autumn (February–April), mature plants may surprise you with fragrant, tubular white-green blossoms. This hardy plant thrives on neglect, tolerating drought and low light, yet flourishes in bright sun or semi-shade. Perfect for containers, minimalist interiors, or water-wise landscapes, it’s a versatile choice that blends elegance with resilience. Bring sculptural sophistication to your space with the African Spear (Sansevieria cylindrica).
Why You’ll Love It
- Striking spear-like leaves add modern elegance.
- Thrives in Cape Town’s dry summers with minimal care.
- Tolerates both indoor low light and outdoor sun.
- Rare, fragrant blooms in late summer.
- Perfect for water-wise and contemporary gardens.
Plant & Care
Plant in well-draining soil or a decorative pot with good drainage. Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings, especially in winter. Wipe leaves occasionally to keep their sheen indoors. Divide clumps every few years to refresh growth. Position in bright light for stronger growth, but it will adapt to semi-shade or even low-light corners indoors.
