Asclepias speciosa

Showy milkweed is a robust perennial that is pure magic for pollinators - especially butterflies. Its pink, firework-shaped flowers are an incredible nectar source that attracts an array of bees and butterflies, its large blue-green leaves provide food for larval caterpillars, and the plant's alkaloid compounds boost butterflies' resistance to predators. In a region with relatively small populations of butterflies, due to our generally cloudy climate, Showy milkweed supports our local butterflies, while rewarding us gardeners with glimpses of their elegance.

  • Plant type/canopy layer: deciduous, perennial, herbaceous plant
  • Size at maturity: 36-48" tall, spreads laterally by rhizomes forming dense patches
  • Light requirements: full sun to mostly sunny
  • Moisture requirements: dry to moist soil, well-drained soil
  • Bloom time: June - Aug
  • Growth rate/ease: medium growth rate, easy to grow
  • Wildlife support: flowers attract and provide nectar to hummingbirds, adult butterflies, bees and other insect pollinators; overall plant attracts and supports beneficial insects and other pest eating insects and is a caterpillar host plant and larval food source for native butterflies and moths
  • Native habitat/range: common in valleys, roadsides, fields, near streams and disturbed areas, from sea level up to 1600m, in most areas of Oregon, as well as California, Idaho, Nevada, Washington, north to British Columbia, northeast to Manitoba, east to Michigan, southeast to Texas. Portland Plant List - no (though there are historical occurrences in Multnomah County so this could be disputed).
  • Special features & uses: important plant for pollinators, specifically butterflies and hummingbirds

Gardening with Showy Milkweed: Showy milkweed prefers sunny to partially-sunny conditions with dry, well-drained soils - but it can tolerate moisture and even seasonal flooding if the water is fast-draining. It can also handle some drought once established. It is generally intolerant of root disturbance and can be slow growing at first. But, once established, it spreads aggressively by rhizomes and may form dense colonies, particularly in roadside ditches and other wild areas. Foliage dies back completely in winter, and emerges late the next spring in April or May, often one of the last to come up in a perennial flower bed.

Seed Packet Contains: approximately 50 seeds

Seed Sowing Instructions: Can be fall, spring, or summer sown, as it requires no stratification. Newly germinated seedlings are frost sensitive so mid-late spring to early summer sowing is suggested. Protect new seedlings if frost threatens. Mature plants come up late in the spring.

  • Planting depth: 1/4” - just to cover
  • Seeding rate: broadcast approx 20 seeds/sq ft, add 3-5 seeds per small pot or 3-5 seeds per spot (in situ)

Works great, gonna order a different scent next time
Scent: Santal & Vetiver, Size: 2.6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
It does it's job and I tried it out for 48 hrs and it did prevent odors. Low activity level those days but it did hold up. However, reading the reviews I had high expectations for the santal vetiver scent and ended up ordering it. That's the only thing I do not like about this deodorant. The smell. It's okayyyyyy but not my favorite or pleasant to my nose in any way. I do like how it feels, the ingredients, that's it's small company owned, it works well for what it's supposed to do and it's easy to apply. I just wish I would've ordered another smell. Because it's expensive enough that I won't be replacing it until it's completely gone. So maybe I'll learn to love the smell but so far, nope not at all lol

Clean, Long‑Lasting Protection Without Irritation
Scent: Bergamot & Hinoki, Size: 2.6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
This deodorant is a great pick if you want something aluminum‑free that actually holds up through a full day. The formula goes on smooth, doesn’t feel sticky, and dries down quickly without leaving residue on clothes. It has a clean, fresh scent that isn’t overpowering, and it stays consistent as the day goes on. What I appreciate most is how gentle it is — no burning, no irritation, and no chalky buildup. Even with the softer feel, the protection is strong and lasts well through heat, errands, and everyday activity. It’s one of those deodorants that feels more “skincare‑forward” than chemical‑heavy. If you’re looking for a natural option that still delivers real staying power, this one is a solid upgrade.

Wonderful, but also couldn't stand up to the funk
Scent: Black Rose & Oud, Size: 2.6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
This was my first time using this brand and I used it faithfully for about 9 months. I've been using more natural and aluminum-free deodorants for several years now. I have sensitive underarms so I stay away from "clinical strength" or a lot of chemicals. I've tried both ladies' and men's brands (I'm a woman) and they only seem to work for a little while before they completely stop working and I have to switch to something new (or back to an old one). I decided to give this one a try after seeing it pop up on Amazon a lot and also because the one I was using isn't sold in stores and would sometimes take a week or more to get to me. My first impression of this deodorant was that I like the compact, round packaging and how easy it is to use (the bottom twists very smoothly). Secondly, IT SMELLS AMAZING. Black rose and Oud is such a delicious scent - lightly floral, sweet, a little powdery, and a little musky. Every time I applied it, I kept falling more in love with the scent. And it also applied to my underarms very smoothly and without any pulling or roughness. It's worth noting that I started using this deodorant during a heat wave; we had about three weeks of temperatures between 90-100 degrees F with 75-95% humidity. Surprise surprise, this deodorant held up! Mind you, it's deodorant and not antiperspirant, so, yes, I did sweat, but, no, I did not smell. I applied it once a day (or the night before) and had no issues. This deodorant also held up exceptionally when I was exercising and it did not leave me smelling bad at all after workouts. Now, where this deodorant DID NOT HOLD UP is when it came to hormone changes and (emotional) stress. Whenever that time of the month came around, the deodorant significantly weakened and I had to apply it again during the day. For me, that's actually normal and I pretty much have that happen with any deodorant. It's performance during stress was pretty terrible though. I went through a few months of intense mental/emotional stress and this deodorant completely failed me. The second I got anxious or stressed out, my armpits would start to pool and turn into a swampy mess and I would immediately smell terrible. Not once did the deodorant hold up to my stress sweat or funk, which was very disappointing since I liked it very much outside of that one issue. I ended up just throwing it away (since I wasn't sure when the stress would stop) and going back to my previous deodorant that worked wonderfully, now sells on Amazon, and I highly recommend: Kosas! It is pricey like this one, but the main selling point for me is that it contains AHA and BHAs that stop the funk and also brighten (and keep bright) the underarm area. It also neutralizes razor burn.

Fabulous deodorant and I get compliments on scent
Scent: Bergamot & Hinoki, Size: 2.6 Ounce (Pack of 1), Scent: Bergamot & Hinoki, Size: 2.6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I've always had problems with deodorant. Irritation, complaints from ladies on the scent. I've even had a few that discolored my pits. The cheaper ones leave marks on clothing. To be fair, I was introduced to this by Thrive MRKT; and the price is cheaper there. BUT, after running out, and Thrive having low or zero stock, getting this from Amazon 12 hours after ordering, I realized this is an essential item for me. Good ingredients and lovely silky texture, you don't notice it's working. Dries super fast, not sticky or heavy texture, feels lightweight/invisible. I've even had deodorant in the past where i'd flap my arms or blow on pits hoping it would dry. No such ridiculousness here. 5/5 Stars highly recommend. Premium product and well worth the price. I even get compliments from my lady friends on this sent.

I like this EXPENSIVE deodorant
Scent: Bergamot & Hinoki, Size: 2.6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I really like the deoderant, as it seems to work well and goes on easily with no staining, etc. The reviews seem to emphasize the wonderful smell, but it is very mild and I find the smell minimal. It is rather expensive for a deodorant, but it works, so I will leave that up to the individual. Not sure if I will purchase again, but only because of the price, but I do like the product.
