Imperial Gem English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia 'Imperial Gem')

Imperial Gem English Lavender, Lavandula angustifolia 'Imperial Gem', is a compact English lavender prized for its deep purple flower spikes, tidy mounded habit, and strongly fragrant gray green foliage. Plants form a dense, rounded cushion that tucks neatly along paths, at the front of borders, and in containers, delivering classic lavender color and scent without taking much space. Short, full flower spikes rise just above the foliage in early to midsummer, drawing in pollinators and creating a rich ribbon of color that works as a subtle but effective focal point in sunny garden areas.

Distinctive Features

Imperial Gem English Lavender typically grows about 12 to 18 inches tall and 14 to 20 inches wide, forming a naturally compact dome that stays neat with light pruning. Flower spikes are shorter than some traditional varieties but densely packed with deep purple florets, giving a strong, saturated look when the plant is in bloom. Narrow, gray green leaves add fine texture and a soft, silvery cast that remains attractive well beyond the flowering season, so the plant continues to function as a foliage accent. The combination of rich flower color, strong fragrance, and a balanced, low profile habit makes this variety especially useful where you want full lavender impact on a smaller scale.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Prefers full sun with at least 6 hours of direct light daily for best flowering, compact growth, and strong fragrance.
  • Soil: Thrives in well drained, lean to average soils; avoid heavy, wet ground and favor sandy or gravelly conditions that keep roots on the dry side.
  • Water: Water regularly after planting to establish; once rooted in, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the top of the soil to dry between waterings.
  • Hardiness: Well suited to many temperate regions where English lavender is grown outdoors, especially when given sharp drainage in winter.
  • Size: Forms a compact mound about 12 to 18 inches tall and 14 to 20 inches wide at maturity, depending on climate and care.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate grower that fills in steadily without quickly outgrowing beds, borders, or containers.

Ideal Uses

  • Edging and Low Borders: Plant in a row along walks, drives, or bed edges to create a low, fragrant band of gray green foliage and deep purple bloom.
  • Containers and Patio Pots: Excellent in clay pots, troughs, and mixed planters where the compact mound and upright flower spikes add height, scent, and color without overwhelming companions.
  • Front of Border Accent: Ideal for the front of sunny beds where its neat shape and rich flowers form a dependable visual anchor.
  • Herb and Scent Gardens: Perfect near seating areas, entries, and paths so aromatic foliage and blooms can be brushed and enjoyed up close.
  • Cottage and Mediterranean Gardens: Mix with roses, salvias, grasses, and other sun loving perennials for classic cottage combinations, or pair with stone and gravel for a Mediterranean feel.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: After establishment, water when the top inch of soil is dry; avoid constant moisture or soggy conditions that can lead to root problems.
  • Pruning: Shear lightly after the main flush of bloom to remove spent spikes and keep a dense mound; avoid cutting back into old, woody stems that lack leaves.
  • Fertilizing: Requires only light feeding; in spring, apply a small amount of balanced, slow release fertilizer if soil is very lean, since excessive nutrients can cause soft, floppy growth.
  • Mulching: Use a thin layer of gravel or coarse mulch around the base to improve drainage and keep foliage off wet soil, avoiding heavy organic mulches against the stems.
  • Seasonal Care: In colder climates, provide excellent drainage and a sunny, sheltered spot; in late winter or early spring, tidy lightly to remove any winter damage and keep the plant compact.

Why Choose Imperial Gem English Lavender?

  • Rich Purple Flower Color: Deep, saturated blooms create a classic lavender look that stands out in borders and along paths.
  • Compact, Tidy Habit: Naturally rounded form is easy to manage in small gardens, narrow borders, and containers.
  • Aromatic Foliage: Fragrant gray green leaves add soothing scent and soft texture to paths, patios, and outdoor seating areas.
  • Sun and Heat Tolerant: Performs well in hot, bright exposures when planted in well drained soil or raised beds.
  • Versatile Design Use: Works as edging, in mixed borders, in herb and cutting gardens, or as a container feature wherever you want dependable lavender color, fragrance, and structure in a compact package.

With its compact habit, deep purple flower spikes, and fragrant gray green foliage, Imperial Gem English Lavender is an excellent choice for adding classic lavender style, scent, and a refined, low maintenance focal point to sunny borders, pathways, and containers.

Flavor distribution could be better
Size: 2 Pound
I receive Spravato treatments, and the taste is nasty. Fruit candy is a good way to get rid of it. I discovered that the tropical fruit punch flavor was best at it. Unfortunately, the clinic switched to a different kind of suckers and kept them poorly stocked, so I bought my own. Two pounds of suckers and not a single tropical fruit punch! Lots of mango and orange, which also work well, but in two pounds, you'd think there'd be some of every flavor.

An Exceptional Resource.
Format: Hardcover
I learned Greek and Hebrew in my graduate studies and anyone who has done that knows the great joy it is to be able to read the original languages of scripture. With the footnotes, though, getting through the text becomes much easier than if you simply have an NA28 or BHS. To echo what other reviewers have said, I also think that the new binding is a big plus over the previous edition - the book is so large that with a leather or trutone binding it can be a bit cumbersome. With the cloth over board, it fits well in your hands, feels more durable, and in my view is an improvement. However, one might say that calling it a "second edition" was not really necessary since the actual text is essentially the same as the previous - just the binding and the material used for the pages is different (as far as I can tell). The font is a good size as well. Any bigger and the book really would have been exceptionally large. But any smaller and it would be too hard to read. So I feel like they struck a good balance here. One thing that they could have done better in making this was include the BHQ texts of the Hebrew books that have already been released as of 2020 (Ruth, Proverbs, Deuteronomy, the 12 Minor Prophets, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Lamentations, Esther, Judges, and Ezra-Nehemiah) rather than the BHS that was in the previous edition. All of those BHQ texts had been released as of the time that this was being produced, so they could have easily updated these books and made it a true "second edition" with some significant updates that have come from recent years of scholarship on these books. All of the BHQ Old Testament will probably not be out until 2030 or so, but those particular books have been available for a while. I assume that there was a reason for this, and perhaps Zondervan was not allowed to use the BHQ texts in this volume since the BHQ texts are so new, but that is really the only area for improvement that I can think of. It would be a great addition to anyone's library who has at least two semesters of the languages.

Great resource for keeping up biblical language skills
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
I am excited to have purchased this book. I graduated from seminary over a decade ago, and I have definitely lost a lot of my proficiency with Greek and Hebrew. I have been looking for something to help get back into the flow of things, and this just might be it. The book contains both the Hebrew and Greek scriptures, which makes it several inches thick. On the plus side, the whole Bible is there in one book. However, it's not as portable as I'd like it to be. But that is the only downside I've discovered so far. The pages and hard over are of really good quality--they just feel good in your hands. The Hebrew and Greek fonts used are very readable, better than my critical editions. Some other reviewers have commented negatively on the yellow paper, but it hasn't been an issue with me. (Your results may vary.) The text itself has footnotes with quick definitions for all infrequent words (occurring <100x for Hebrew, <30x for Greek), so you don't have to look up that one word in the passage that, as it turns out, is a hapax legomenon or something. Each Testament also has a short lexicon with quick definitions for every word not defined in the footnotes. So in theory you should be able to look up any word quickly and easily just with this book. As an added bonus, infrequently occurring names in the Hebrew Bible are indicated in a light grey font, so again, you can quickly see that it's a name instead of getting frustrated trying to translate it as a regular noun. One word about usage: This is not an "academic" book per se. That is, you're not going to be able to do detailed word studies or compare manuscript variants with this book. Even the definitions are just quick glosses, meant to get you down the road, not to provide technical etymological information. The purpose of this book is to help you read and familiarize yourself with the original-language text, or, like me, to keep your language skills sharp. And I believe that it will do this well.
