Heart Fern is one of the most charming and distinctive small ferns you can grow. Its perfectly heart-shaped leaves grow individually on slender, dark, slightly fuzzy stems — each leaf a rich, deep green with a smooth, almost leathery texture that sets it apart from the feathery fronds of most ferns. It stays compact, loves humidity, and brings a quiet, sculptural elegance to terrariums, bathroom shelves, and plant arrangements.
Good for beginners? It requires more attention than basic plants — Heart Fern needs consistent moisture and higher humidity to thrive. It is best suited to growers who can provide a humid environment and stay on top of watering.
Safe for cats and dogs? Yes. Heart Fern is non-toxic to pets, making it safe for homes with cats and dogs.
Light needs: Bright indirect light or partial shade. Avoid direct sun which will scorch the delicate leaves. It does beautifully in bathrooms and terrariums where natural humidity is higher.
Care at a glance: Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Never let it dry out completely. High humidity is essential — mist regularly, use a pebble tray, or grow in a terrarium. Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted fertilizer.
