About Echeveria agavoides 'Wild Horse'
Echeveria agavoides 'Wild Horse' is a sculptural cultivar distinguished by its dynamic architecture and intense stress coloration. This agavoides variant forms starburst-shaped rosettes up to 7 inches wide, featuring sharply pointed, triangular leaves with a distinct saddle-like central groove. The foliage exhibits a vibrant apple-green base that transitions to fiery crimson margins under sunlight, culminating in near-black tips during winter stress. Mature specimens produce bell-shaped coral flowers on burgundy stalks in late spring. Its geometric precision and chromatic intensity make it a centerpiece specimen for contemporary succulent displays.
How to Care for Echeveria agavoides 'Wild Horse'
Light: Requires 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal color expression. South-facing exposures are ideal; in USDA zones 9-11, provide 20% shade cloth during summer afternoons (>90°F/32°C) to prevent leaf scorch.
Water: Water deeply only when soil is completely dry (typically 14-18 days in summer). Reduce to monthly in winter dormancy. Avoid wetting the leaf center to prevent rot.
Temperature: Thrives in 55-80°F (13-27°C). Tolerates brief frost to 28°F (-2°C) when dry. Prolonged heat above 85°F (29°C) necessitates enhanced airflow.
Soil & Potting: Plant in 70% mineral grit (lava rock/perlite) mixed with 30% organic matter. Select shallow terracotta pots 2 inches wider than rosettes to accommodate radial growth.
Fertilizer: Apply low-nitrogen formula (3-4-3 NPK) at 1/4 strength monthly April-August. Excess nitrogen causes weak, elongated growth.
Pests & Disease: Resistant to most pests; occasionally susceptible to scale. Treat with horticultural oil sprays. Root rot prevention requires strict adherence to dry intervals.
Propagation: Echeveria agavoides 'Wild Horse' propagates most effectively via offset division with 95% success. Separate 1.5-inch diameter pups during spring repotting, dry connections for 48 hours, then plant in dry lava grit. Delay watering for 7 days. Maintain 68-75°F (20-24°C) under bright indirect light. Offsets establish in 3-4 weeks, reaching maturity in 8-10 months.
