Ilex crenata ‘Dwarf Pagoda’

Ilex crenata ‘Dwarf Pagoda’ is a slow-growing, evergreen holly prized for its sculptural quality and versatility. Its tiny but substantial rounded leaves are arranged in close layers on short, stiff stems, giving it a charming, layered appearance. The plant’s naturally irregular form adds structure and interest to small-scale plantings, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, troughs, or any space where a touch of evergreen elegance is desired.

Adaptable to a range of conditions, ‘Dwarf Pagoda’ thrives with minimal care throughout the year, but be mindful to shield it from early frosts to protect new growth. Its modest stature and unique visual appeal make this holly a standout selection, whether you’re seeking a subtle focal point or a companion piece in a thoughtfully composed garden setting.

Many perennials and bonsai plants take on a 'winter look' that's different from their summer appearance. The colder temperatures and shorter days trigger seasonal changes, which are actually part of their natural cycle. Some plants need this winter break to bloom and perform their best when the growing season returns. While they might look semi-dormant until early spring, these cosmetic changes don’t impact their health at all.

Bonsai Basic Care: Hard

Watering: Bonsais require careful watering. The frequency depends on the species and the climate, but generally, the soil should be kept slightly moist. Check the soil daily, and water thoroughly when the top layer feels dry.

Light: Most bonsai trees prefer bright, indirect light. A few hours of direct sunlight early in the morning or late in the afternoon is beneficial, but a direct midday sun can be harmful, especially in hotter climates.

Soil/Drainage: To prevent water retention and root rot, use a well-draining bonsai-specific soil mix.

Temperature/Humidity: Depending on the species, bonsai trees can be kept indoors or outdoors. Indoor bonsais generally prefer temperatures between 60-75°F and benefit from increased humidity, which can be achieved through daily misting or humidity trays.

Feeding: Fertilize your bonsai regularly during the growing season. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every few weeks or as recommended for the specific type of tree.

Pruning/Training: Pruning is essential to maintaining the shape and health of a bonsai. Regular pruning of the roots and canopy is necessary. Training with wires can also shape branches and direct growth.

Repotting: Most bonsai trees require repotting every 2-5 years to prevent root crowding and replenish nutrients in the soil. This is best done in the spring.

General Tips: Regularly inspect for pests and diseases. Bonsai trees are susceptible to insect infestations and fungal infections, which should be treated promptly to keep the tree healthy.

Actually Durable
Color: B) Medium 3" Ball
One of the few "heavy duty" toys that my pittie hasn't destroyed after a couple of weeks. Most of them last two days. She's an absolute beast so I'm confident if she can't destroy it, few dogs can.

Not for aggressive chewers!
Color: H) Infinity Ring, Color: H) Infinity Ring
Not for aggressive chewers! Done for in about two minutes. I unboxed this and tugged with my Mal for a but then let her have it. Within minutes she had chewed through it. Not worth the money.

Not Quite So Durable...
Color: B) Medium 3" Ball, Color: B) Medium 3" Ball
Maybe I have a SUPER aggressive chewer...he went through this ball in under a week. I originally bought the ball because of a review that stated the owner's Pitbull had the same ball for two years; not so much for my Rottweiler. He started chewing off and swallowing small crumbs from the ball within a day or two. By the end of the week, it was chunks so I had to toss it in the trash to prevent an intestinal obstruction. On the up side, my Rottweiler LOVED the ball while it lasted. However, I can't, in good conscience, give this ball a rave review based on this experience. Please take this review with a grain of salt as I have yet to find ANY toy that my boy won't DESTROY in a week or two. I hope that someone finds this informative when searching for chew toys for SUPER aggressive chewers like mine.
