Alocasia Black Velvet is one of the most extraordinary miniature plants in the houseplant world. Its small, thick, rigid leaves are a deep, near-black with a velvety matte texture and striking silvery-white veins that trace across every leaf like fine brushstrokes on dark canvas. It is compact, jewel-like, and looks unlike anything else — a collector's plant in the truest sense that earns its place in any curated collection.
Good for beginners? It requires more attention than beginner plants. Alocasia Black Velvet prefers warmth, humidity, and consistent moisture. It is sensitive to cold and overwatering. It rewards growers who understand Alocasia care.
Safe for cats and dogs? Alocasia is toxic to pets if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
Light needs: Bright indirect light keeps the velvety texture and silvery veining most dramatic. Avoid direct sun which will bleach the near-black color. Insufficient light causes slow growth and duller leaf texture.
Care at a glance: Keep soil lightly and evenly moist — never soggy, never bone dry. High humidity is important — mist regularly or place near a humidifier. Very sensitive to cold — keep above 60°F at all times. Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted fertilizer.
