Philodendron Erubescens Care Guide

The Philodendron Erubescens is the perfect indoor plant for beginners and busy plant parents. For one, you get an attractive Philodendron with unique colouring, and caring for it is practically fuss-free. As an added plus, the Philodendron Erubescens does not even require plenty of bright, direct sunlight. If your house or apartment is not particularly flooded with natural light, the Erubescens is the ideal plant for you. These are the things you need to know when caring for a Philodendron Erubescens:

Light requirements

Unlike other Philodendron varieties that thrive in bright, indirect light, the Philodendron Erubescens prefers medium indirect light. Take care not to avoid sunlight altogether, however. Insufficient light can cause your Philodendron to have leggy stems. Avoid positioning your plant in a south facing window to prevent the leaves from getting scorched. Yellowing leaves is also a sign that your plant is getting too much bright, direct sunlight. As a general rule of thumb, northern and eastern facing windows work best for your Erubescens. Pro tip: Giving your plant the right amount of sunlight is like a delicate balancing act — too much light can scorch the leaves of your Philodendron. Too little light, on the other hand, will cause your plant to lose its beautiful red markings. If you’re unsure which is the best position for your plant, consult with your local gardening professionals for suggestions. This way, you know you’re giving your Erubescens the best plant care possible.

Water

When it comes to watering your Erubescens, underwatering is better than overwatering. Philodendrons dislike too much water, in general, and can develop root rot when they get waterlogged. You’ll know when your plant is overwatered when the leaves turn yellow. Avoid watering too frequently, or too much. Don’t fret if you miss a watering session or two — your plant baby will still survive as long as there’s some moisture in the soil. To test for moisture, stick your finger into the soil. It should feel moist but not soggy. When the soil feels dry, that’s your signal to water your plant again. Pro tip: Your Erubescens may not be such a big fan of liquid, but it doesn’t like to be completely dry either. Take care not to let it get dehydrated in between waterings — even just a little moisture in the soil can mean the difference between a thriving Philodendron and a wilted one.

Soil

Well-draining soil that is enriched with organic matter and perlite is the best planting mix for your Erubescens. For soil that has a high clay content, loosen it with sand to allow more air into the soil.

Planthood Potting Mix

Designed exactly with your philodendron’s origins in mind, Planthood’s barky mix mimics the origins of these tree-huggers which thrive on aerial roots and attach on other trees for support. Get ready for your plant to grow wild!

Humidity levels

Philodendrons thrive best in humid conditions. When grown in an environment with high humidity, their leaves and stems become plump and healthy-looking. Low humidity causes your Erubescens to look droopy and weak. There are many ways to increase the humidity levels in your Philodendron’s environment. One method is to use a pebble tray with water. Simply replenish the water when all of the moisture has evaporated. Grouping Philodendrons together also gives your plants some much-needed humidity. It’s also a great way to bulk up the look of your plants and create a botanical focal point in your home. Pro tip: Try our favourite trick when growing Philodendrons — place them in the bathroom! This is the quickest — and easiest — way to give your plant a humid environment. Bathrooms are the most humid area in any home and are perfect for mimicking the conditions in a rainforest (also known as the natural habitat of Philodendrons).

Temperature

The Erubescens is not as cold- and drought-tolerant as other Philodendron varieties. Temperatures of 40C or lower can cause permanent damage to your Philodendron. Watch out for temperatures higher than 350C as well — this may prove to be too hot for your plant, and your Erubescens can start showing signs of stress. Transfer your Philodendron to a cooler part of your home to prevent it from wilting. A moderate room temperature of about 15 to 180C is just about right for your Philodendron Erubescens.

Fertilising

While your Philodendron Erubescens is a fast grower, it can still benefit from a monthly fertilising. A well-fertilised plant will continue to produce large, healthy-looking leaves and will be more disease-resistant than its under-fertilised counterpart. Use a balanced indoor plant food that is well-suited to your Philodendron.

Support

The Erubescens is a fast-growing Philodendron variety. This climber works best when attached to a trellis or any structural support. When grown to its full height, these fiery redheads can reach 6m tall.

Pruning

Pruning a Philodendron Erubescens is done to manage its shape and size. Remove any leggy stems and cut off any yellowing leaves to maintain your plant’s robust form.

Toxicity

When growing an Erubescens indoors, take care not to let pets or little kids ingest any part of the plant. Tempting as it looks, this variety is toxic to both humans and animals. The Erubescens has calcium oxalate crystals that are known to be a skin irritant.

Common problems

Foliage pests and diseases are common in Philodendrons. Watch out for scale and mealybugs on new growth. Discoloured leaves and leaf mottling — a type of leaf distortion when the leaf growth is stunted — can signal the presence of spider mites. Pro tip: A healthy Philodendron is your best ally against pest infestation and disease. Make sure that your plant is receiving sufficient light, humidity, and moisture to keep it resistant to disease and pests.

How to propagate Philodendron Erubescens

With everything going on for the Philodendron Erubescens, it’s hard not to fall in love with it. You’ll definitely want to fill your home with this gorgeous plant. There’s no need to keep on buying, though. You can propagate these Philodendrons at home, and it’s super easy to do. To grow an Erubescens from an existing plant, all you need to do is get a cutting with one or two nodes on the stem. Place the cutting in water and wait for the roots to grow out of the nodes — this can take several weeks or months. As soon as the roots are long enough (several cm long is just about right), you can transplant your cutting into your planting mix. Any well-draining potting mix will do. If the soil is too dense, you can loosen it with perlite and sand. Allow your new plant to grow into its new home — and avoid overwatering at all costs to prevent root rot. There you have it, your very own Philodendron Erubescens!

Cool, lightweight, and surprisingly comfortable!
I absolutely love this cooling comforter! The first thing I noticed is how lightweight it is. It comes in at just over 3 pounds, so it’s not thick or bulky at all, which I really appreciate. It feels easy to move around and doesn’t weigh you down while you’re sleeping. I chose the queen size in dark gray. It’s reversible, which is such a nice bonus. One side has a simple white stripe pattern that gives it a little personality, and the other side is a solid gray. The solid gray side is the cooling side, and oh my goodness, it feels so silky and smooth to the touch. That cool-to-the-touch feeling is really noticeable when you first get under it. I didn’t have any issues with it sliding off the bed, but I’ll mention that I don’t toss and turn a lot at night, so that may be part of it. If you’re someone who moves around more, your experience might be a little different. As far as washing goes, I did notice a small inconsistency. The product description recommends hanging it to dry, but the tag on the comforter says it can be machine washed and dried. I’m going to go ahead and follow the tag instructions and tumble dry it. I’ll definitely come back and update if I notice any issues after machine drying it. I live in the South and right now our weather is actually pretty mild so it’s a little hard to say just how much of the cooling effect is from the blanket versus the temperature in the house. That said, I do feel like it’s helping. I haven’t been waking up hot and the fabric itself definitely feels cool and breathable so I’m excited to see how it performs when the real heat kicks in. I’m also really pleased with the overall quality. The stitching looks clean, there are no loose threads and everything feels well made and thoughtfully put together. It gives me confidence that it will hold up nicely over time. This doesn’t affect my rating, but I do wish there were more color or pattern options to choose from. It would be fun to have a few more styles, especially since it’s such a nice-looking comforter. 5 stars for its lightweight feel, silky cooling fabric, and solid, well-made construction.

This is a great blanket for those who prefer to be cool all night.
This is a great blanket for those who prefer to be slightly cooler all night. I have been using this for almost two months now. It's been difficult to figure out how to explain it's use. Ultimately I have figured out that it acts like a blanket, insulating and keeping you warm, however, wherever the blanket is actually resting on your skin stays cool. It took me a while to figure it out. How does an insulating blanket cool you? I'm not sure how the material actually works, but that is what it does, at least for slightly cool interior weather with a bit of humidity. I imagine in the desert it may work differently. I would say nights when a sheet may be too cold or thin, and a blanket way too hot, this is the in between. The material itself is soft and almost silky. It is made well, has a pleasant appearance on the bed, and doesn't wrinkle. So getting up in the morning it is easy to toss and make the bed. It breathes unlike a duvet cover and feather blanket, so no need to air it out so much. I have come to really love it and recommend it for anyone looking for an in between, between a sheet and comforter. I have never woken up sweating or pulling it off at night. My only experience was at first thinking I was cold but learning that I was not, only where my skin was in contact! For the quality and price, it is definitely worth giving it a try!

Attractive Comforter That Will Keep Hot Sleepers Cool
The Bedsmile striped cooling comforter ice blanket for hot sleepers is amazing. It's cool and comfortable thanks to its unique structure. If you're a hot sleeper, then this comforter is definitely the one for you. This comforter gives you the comfort of a blanket, but manages to also keep you cool throughout the night. It's soft and it feels cold to the touch on one side and smooth and comforting on the other. This is because one side is made from nylon which feels cool because it's a synthetic, thermally conductive material that quickly draw heat away from your skin. My daughter is the lucky recipient of this comforter, and she loves it. It matches perfectly with the gray sheets and pillowcases she already has. I have to admit I had my doubts when I first pulled it out of the package and saw it wasn't thick like a traditional comforter, but so far it has exceeded my expectations. The design is very attractive, gray with white stripes on one side, and a solid gray on the other. It is the solid gray side that is made of nylon for that cooling effect. It’s lightweight without feeling flimsy, and it is well-stitched. This is a quality comforter made with top of the line material. It's Queen size and its measurements are true. The ad says it is "reversible" but the solid gray side is nylon and that is where you get the cooling benefits...plus, it looks so much better with the gray and white strips on top. I'm really happy with this bedspread, it looks great, it is made with quality materials, it is soft and silky and it does keep you cool and comfortable at night. If you're looking for a good nights sleep, I highly recommend this comforter.

Quality design, materials, and stitching...with one annoying trait
There is a lot to love about this comforter. First, as advertised, it works. I don't know how, but on a warm day in the house it feels great to cover yourself in it and to feel its "coolness." The design is cool as well, but in a stylistic way. It's elegant and tasteful, and the colors went well with our mocha-colored walls. And the fabric color is neutral enough that it will go with a large range of colors. The fabric has a high thread count, so it looks, feels, and is luxurious. Stitching is perfect. Overall, the design and materials are superior...with one--for me, anyway--annoying characteristic: we couldn't keep the comforter on the bed. The backing material is so very smooth and shiny that the moment it was disturbed even in a slight way, this lovely blanket went instantly to the floor night after night, sliding down on that smoothness and shininess. As a result we keep it kind of rolled/folded up in the middle of the bed during the day (which is a shame because the design is so nice), and we find ourselves frustrated at night when it invariably slides off the bed! All told, this is an elegant, quality made comforter. I almost knocked a star off for its seeming inability to stay on the bed. But it looks so nice, is so well made, and actually works, that it deserves a 5-star rating. Just be ready to grab it quickly when it starts its quick slide to the floor in the middle of the night. A good value. Recommended.

Nice for cooling but not so cool with staying on the bed
Color: Black Pinstripe, Size: King(108"x90")
Definitely cooled while sleeping however due to the silky fabric it did not stay on the bed and often ended up on the floor by morning.
