What is a Boldo Leaf?
Boldo is a small tree or bush that grows in the central parts of Chile, Argentina, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru. The plant can reach a height of 6 m. Medicine uses the woody, bitter-smelling leaves. Small pink-white flowers turn into small green fruits that you can eat. Boldo tea is made from the boldo tree (Peumus boldus), which is a Chilean evergreen shrub that also grows in other Central and South American countries like Mexico and Argentina. It lives mostly in mountainous areas.
How do I use Boldo Leaf?
Adults have historically consumed Boldo as a tea. To prepare, percolate 1 gram of dehydrated Boldo leaves for 5 to 10 minutes in 150 mL of simmering water.
Boldo Leaf benefits:
Boldo treats mild gastrointestinal (GI) spasms, gallstones, painful joints (rheumatism), bladder infections, liver disease, and gonorrhea. It also helps the body get rid of extra fluids, calms nerves, speeds up the flow of bile, and kills bacteria.
◉ Stimulate liver function: Bolidine is an antioxidant that is found in Peumus boldus and can cause the liver to make more bile. Plectranthus barbatus also contains forskolin and barbatusine, both of which can have the same effect. If the liver makes more bile, it can work more efficiently and with less effort. Other antioxidants in the plant can also help protect the liver and prevent problems like headaches, nausea, and a general feeling of not being well.
◉ Weight loss aid: Glycosylated flavonoids are found in Peumus boldus. These flavonoids make you pee. The process can help your body get rid of extra fluid, which makes it a good addition to a plan to lose weight.
◉ Complement treatment of gallbladder problems: Boldo makes the gallbladder release bile, which is a chemical that helps the body digest fat. So, this plant might be useful for treating problems with the gallbladder. Boldo can also control how the gallbladder works. When used for gallbladder problems, it should be under the care of a doctor or nurse. Depending on the severity of the symptoms or the issue, Boldo may not be a good idea.
◉ Improve digestion: Both kinds of boldo can help with digestion and reduce gas, especially if you drink it as a tea before or right after a meal. Boldine can also help the gallbladder release bile more effectively, which helps break down fats and eases indigestion.
