5 Gallon Elephant Food – Portulacaria afra
Elephant Food (Portulacaria afra) — a resilient, water-wise succulent shrub admired for its small, glossy green leaves and branching red stems. Native to South Africa, this versatile plant is a favorite for Arizona landscapes, prized for its drought tolerance, sculptural form, and easy care.
The 5 Gallon Elephant Food is perfect for desert gardens, rockscapes, and container displays. Its compact yet full growth habit makes it an excellent choice for accent planting, low hedges, or as a textural companion to cacti and agaves.
Care (simple!)
• Enjoys bright light / full sun
• Water when soil is fully dry
• Very heat + drought tolerant
• Happy in pots or planted outside in warm climates
Easy, resilient, and naturally sculptural — a fantastic option for minimal-maintenance greenery!
Available for local pickup or delivery at The Plant Stand of Arizona.
