Ficus benghalensis 'Audrey' is an elegant and imposing houseplant, prized for its large, velvety leaves and prominent veins. Often nicknamed the "banyan tree," this plant has a majestic appearance with its dark green, elliptical leaves, making it an excellent choice for those looking to bring a touch of lush nature to their living space.
Origin: Native to tropical India, Ficus benghalensis is a sacred tree in some cultures, particularly in Hindu temples. The 'Audrey' variety is a popular cultivar as a houseplant, due to its beauty and tolerance of indoor conditions.
Growth: Ficus benghalensis 'Audrey' has a moderate growth habit indoors and can reach a height of 1.5 to 3 meters, depending on growing conditions. Its leaves are broad, thick, and slightly downy, giving it a soft and pleasant appearance.
Flowers: Like many Ficus, 'Audrey' rarely flowers indoors. When it does flower, it produces small, insignificant flowers, but this plant is primarily grown for its ornamental foliage.
Light: This plant prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate moderate light, but its growth will be more vigorous and its foliage denser in bright light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves.
Watering: Water regularly, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Ficus 'Audrey' prefers slightly moist soil, but it is important to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Reduce watering frequency in winter.
Substrate: A well-draining substrate is essential for this plant. Use a houseplant potting mix enriched with perlite or coarse sand to ensure good drainage.
Toxicity: Ficus benghalensis 'Audrey' is toxic to pets, especially cats and dogs, if ingested. It can cause mouth, throat, and stomach irritation, as well as vomiting. It is therefore recommended to keep it out of reach of pets.
