Schefflera ‘Madame De Smet’ (Variegated Umbrella Plant)
Schefflera ‘Madame De Smet’ is a distinctive variegated foliage plant valued for its glossy, multi-toned leaves and upright growth habit. A cultivar of Schefflera arboricola, it is well suited to indoor environments as well as protected outdoor settings in warm climates.
The foliage consists of palmate leaf clusters arranged in an umbrella-like form. Each leaflet displays a mix of deep green, cream, and soft yellow variegation, often with irregular marbling that gives the plant a bright, decorative appearance. The variation in colour makes each plant slightly unique.
Key Features
‘Madame De Smet’ is prized for its strong visual contrast and ability to brighten interior spaces. The variegated foliage provides interest without the need for flowers, making it suitable for year-round display.
It is relatively hardy and adaptable compared to many variegated plants, tolerating a range of indoor conditions while maintaining good foliage quality.
Its upright, branching growth allows it to be styled as a compact bush or trained into a small indoor tree.
Growth Habit and Size
This plant grows as an upright shrub with multiple stems that can be pruned to shape.
Indoors, it typically reaches 1 to 2 metres in height, depending on pot size and conditions. Outdoors in suitable climates, it may grow larger.
Growth rate is moderate under stable conditions.
Care Requirements
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain strong variegation. It can tolerate medium light conditions, though colour contrast may reduce.
Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering. The plant prefers moderate watering and should not be kept consistently wet.
Water approximately once per week, adjusting based on environment.
Soil
A well-draining indoor potting mix is suitable. Good drainage is important to prevent root issues.
Temperature and Humidity
Thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C.
Tolerates average indoor humidity but benefits from moderate humidity levels.
Maintenance
Prune as needed to maintain shape and encourage branching.
Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust and maintain their glossy appearance.
Fertilise lightly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
Repot every 2–3 years or when root-bound.
Common Issues
Leaf drop may occur due to sudden changes in temperature, light, or watering conditions.
Yellowing leaves may indicate overwatering or poor drainage.
Loss of variegation can occur in low light conditions.
Pests such as scale or spider mites may occasionally appear.
Applications
Schefflera ‘Madame De Smet’ is suitable for:
Indoor feature planting
Office and commercial interiors
Bright living spaces
Large containers
Tropical-style interiors
Its variegated foliage makes it an effective statement plant.
