What Is Catnip?

Catnip, scientifically known as Nepeta cataria, is a perennial herb from the mint family. If your cat could garden, it would definitely be on their list of must-have herb plants!

While catnip is well-known for its euphoric effect on cats, it has many other appealing qualities that make it a great addition to gardens. These include its appearance, potential health benefits, and ability to attract pollinators.

Catnip Appearance and Characteristics

Catnip typically grows to a height of 2-3 feet, with sturdy, square stems characteristic of mint plants. Its leaves are light green, soft, and covered with fine hairs, giving them a slightly fuzzy texture.

The catnip plant's flowers are usually white or lavender and form in small clusters at the ends of the stems. These delicate blooms, as well as catnip's fragrant, heart-shaped leaves, not only add subtle beauty to gardens but, as mentioned, also attract beneficial insects and pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Effects on Cats

The substance in catnip plants that triggers reactions from cats is called "nepetalactone." It is non-toxic, and catnip is safe for your cats, even daily. However, too-frequent use of catnip can make cats desensitized to its effects.

When exposed to catnip, cats typically behave by licking, rolling, drooling, and chasing. However, reactions to this herb may vary among cats, as a response to catnip is hereditary. Not all cats are affected, and it might not affect senior cats and kittens.

Catnip Origins and History

Catnip is native to Europe and Asia but has become naturalized in North America, where it grows wild in many regions. Historically, catnip was valued for its medicinal properties long before it became famous for its effect on cats. It was used in Europe and Asia for centuries to treat various ailments, from digestive issues to respiratory conditions.

The name "catnip" likely originated in Middle English sometime around the 13th or 14th century. While the first part of the name references the plant's effect on cats ("cat"), experts disagree on the etymology of the second part ("nip"). Some say that "nip" could be derived from the Middle English word "nippen," meaning "to pinch suddenly" or "to bite suddenly," which is how cats typically interact with catnip.

Regardless of its name's etymology, one thing is for sure: cats have loved this plant for centuries!

Catnip Plant Care: Growing Tips

Growing catnip is relatively easy, making it an excellent choice for novice and experienced gardeners. Here are some tips to help you cultivate a thriving catnip plant:

  • Soil and Location: Catnip prefers well-drained soil and a sunny location, though it can tolerate partial shade. Ensure the planting site has good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.

  • Temperature:  Herbaceous perennial hardy in Zones 3 to 9

  • Watering:  Water daily until established in its new home; they become drought tolerant! Water the plants at the base to keep the leaves dry and reduce the risk of disease.

  • Planting: You can start catnip from seeds, cuttings, or transplants. If using seeds, sow them indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date or directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed. Space the plants about 18 inches apart to allow for proper growth.

  • Fertilizing: Catnip does not require heavy feeding. A light application of a balanced fertilizer or compost in the spring should suffice.

  • Pruning: Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and prevents the plant from becoming leggy. Cut back the stems after the first bloom to encourage a second flush of flowers.

  • Managing Spread: This plant can be invasive. Remove the flowers before they go to seed to prevent it from spreading.

Uses and Benefits of Catnip

Catnip is versatile and offers numerous benefits for cats, humans, and the garden itself.

  • For Cats: As mentioned, the most well-known use of catnip is as a stimulant for cats. You can use fresh or dried catnip to make toys or sprinkle it in your cat's play area.

  • For Humans: Catnip has been used in traditional medicine for its calming effects. A gentle antispasmodic and very mild sedative, it can be made into a tea to help with insomnia, anxiety, and digestive issues. Always consult with a healthcare provider before using catnip medicinally.

  • In the Garden: Catnip is an excellent companion plant. Its strong scent deters pests like aphids, squash bugs, and beetles, making it a natural pest repellent. Additionally, its flowers attract pollinators, which can help improve the yield of nearby fruit and vegetable plants, as well as beneficial insects like ladybugs, which prey on garden pests.

  • Culinary Uses: While not a common culinary herb, catnip can also be used in the kitchen. Its leaves can be added to salads, soups, and stews for a minty flavor, though it's essential to use it sparingly due to its very strong taste.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Beyond its practical uses, catnip is an attractive plant that adds beauty to any garden. It is also well-suited for growing indoors, providing a touch of greenery and feline entertainment all year round.

Terrible, look like a ghost
Style: SPF 50, Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I love La Roche-Posay but unfortunately, I finally came across the first product I truly hate from them. This product is a complete white mask on your face and does not settle in at all. You’ll be walking around looking like a ghost all day and it gave me a mild irritation to my eyes.

Leaves white cast, works okay under makeup.
Style: SPF 50, Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
First time using this sunscreen. I have very sensitive skin and thought since my skin tolerates their cleansers and moisturizers surely it should tolerate the sunscreen. So far so good. It’s very calming on my skin (maybe because of the zinc), but it leaves a noticeable white cast especially if you have dark skin. I wear mine under makeup and have a separate sunscreen from another brand on days where I don’t want to wear makeup. The white cast actually acts as a blank base and helps my foundation to lay well. A tip I learned from makeup artists years ago. Sunscreens that leave a white cast cancels out your natural color and acts as a corrector, concealer and foundation to lay better and look more like skin. Think of it like painting on a blank canvas. The texture is not lotion like and is actually quite thick. make sure to moisturize well before apply this sunscreen. I’ll write an update if I notice any negative issues, but so far I’m content with it because of the purpose I'm using it for.

Safe for very sensitive skin

It is an excellent choice, especially if you have sensitive skin or want to avoid chemical filters. Minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide act by forming a barrier that reflects UV rays instead of absorbing them.

Holy Grail Moisturizer for Rosacea
Style: Restorative Protective Cream-3.3 Fl Oz
In seeing so many negative reviews I felt compelled to weigh in as this is my favorite moisturizer. I have very dry, menopausal skin. Additionally, I have rosacea which seems to have been a nice gift from said menopause (you can only laugh, right?). It's very common for those of us in our 50's to have a compromised skin barrier and when an issue like rosacea is present, even more so. Because of all this my skin is very intolerant to most moisturizers and nearly all actives (over the last few years I've had to discontinue my retinols and chemical exfoliators). While ingredients like ALA's, petrolatum, mineral oil, parafin/bees wax, and lanolin are well tolerated and known to be quite soothing, they don't hydrate very well as they are more occlusive than moisturizing. Enter this product. Magically, it does both! It's marketed as a protective cream, which again implies occlusive, but it penetrates like no other. Gone is the tight, dry feeling that persisted even when I had a heavy layer of product on my skin (my previous moisturizer was Eucerin Original Healing Cream -- which still has its uses -- because it was the only thing I could put on my skin outside of squalane oil during a flare). Now, no topical can cure rosacea. However, the right product can calm the skin, repair the damaged lipid barrier, and improve its appearance. This moisturizer does just that and it's become my holy grail. Since starting this I've also added in the Cicalfate Serum which has only aided in repairing my skin. Another Avene product that works great for me is the XeraCalm Balm which helps with itching. I use all three of these daily and they've really helped fix the secondary issues that come with rosacea. As for the complaints about it being greasy or too heavy. I can see this not working for people with normal or oily skin (or perhaps only in moderation). But my skin loves the heavier weight and because one of the ways I soothe a flare is to keep a tiny mister bottle on hand and repeatedly spray my face so I have to guard against the drying effects of evaporation. These products are so lipid heavy that I can wet my face all day long without worrying about that, though I do reapply throughout the day. As for the watery consistency issue, I haven't had that problem but it does caution on the packaging not to expose the product to temperatures below 41 degrees F (5 C). I suspect that if it gets too cold either because of the weather or because of whatever warehouse it sat in during transit it will separate. Maybe open the package and before squeezing some out look to see if it has split and then shake it up/message the tube. So, if you have skin like mine don't hesitate to try this product. I'm leaving this absurdly long review for my struggling brothers and sisters out there with rosacea in hopes that it provides some relief! Happy moisturizing, internet strangers. ;)

Possible solution to seperation
Style: Restorative Protective Cream-1.3 Fl Oz
I love this product so much, but, like everyone else the water HEAVILY separated. A lot of water just shot out immediately and as i've used the cream it has felt more and more thick bc of that, shaking the tube or not. POSSIBLE SOLUTION: I actually think the company could salvage this problem by upgrading packaging to a Cosmetic JAR and then customers could take a toothpick and stir if separation has occurred by the time of purchase. I hope to try this with my next tube, just toothpaste squeezed everything out into a nice cosmetic jar and stir the water back into the product. This is such a simple solution that could really solve the product waste. This refreshes my skin, doesn't break me out, and is lovely. I break out so easily, and being middle aged my skin really requires a dense help with moisture. <3
