About Crassula ovata 'Hobbit'
Crassula ovata 'Hobbit' is a distinctive jade plant cultivar characterized by its unique tubular foliage and sculptural growth habit. This slow-growing succulent develops thick, finger-like leaves with reddish tips that curve inward, creating a distinctive "shrimp tail" appearance. Mature specimens form woody stems and can reach 2-3 feet in height over several years, developing an attractive bonsai-like form. During winter months, established plants may produce clusters of small, star-shaped white or pale pink flowers. Its drought tolerance and architectural interest make it particularly suitable for windowsill cultivation and xeriscape designs.
How to Care for Crassula ovata 'Hobbit'
Light: Bright light with 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily maintains compact growth and enhances leaf coloration. South or west-facing windows provide ideal exposure, though some afternoon shade may be necessary in high-temperature regions.
Water: Thorough watering followed by complete soil drying proves most effective. During active growth (spring-fall), water every 2-3 weeks; reduce to monthly in winter. The succulent nature of the stems provides excellent drought tolerance.
Temperature: This cultivar thrives in average household temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Protection from temperatures below 50°F (10°C) prevents potential leaf damage.
Soil & Potting: A well-draining cactus mix amended with 30-40% perlite or pumice ensures proper root aeration. Heavy containers provide stability as the plant develops woody stems.
Fertilizer: Balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength can be applied monthly during the growing season. Discontinue feeding during winter dormancy.
Pests & Disease: Mealybugs may occasionally infest leaf axils, though early detection and treatment with isopropyl alcohol proves effective. Overwatering represents the primary cultural challenge.
Propagation: Stem cuttings of 3-4 inches length demonstrate high rooting success when allowed to callus for several days before planting. Leaf propagation is less reliable for this cultivar.
