Anthurium Warocqueanum

The Queen Anthurium — a title that has been applied to this Colombian cloud forest species for so long and so consistently across the collector aroid community that it has become effectively official, and one that the plant earns without argument the moment a well-grown specimen is seen in person. Native to the humid montane forests of Colombia's Chocó and Antioquia departments at elevations of roughly 1,000-2,000 meters, Anthurium warocqueanum produces leaves of a scale, texture, and venation quality that define the upper limit of what the velvet anthurium group is capable of — enormous, pendant, deeply velvety, elongated cordate leaves that in exceptional cultivated specimens exceed four feet in length while carrying a network of brilliant white to silver primary and secondary venation of extraordinary clarity and contrast against the near-black, matte velvet surface. The pendant habit is critical to the plant's visual identity — unlike the upright or spreading leaves of most velvet anthuriums, warocqueanum leaves hang downward from the petiole attachment with a graceful, weighted pendulousness that makes the full leaf length visible from below, and that requires an elevated position to be properly displayed and fully developed without the leaf tip contacting the ground or a surface. Leaf size increases dramatically with elevation on a climbing support and with overall plant maturity — a juvenile plant's modest leaves give no real preparation for what a mature, well-grown specimen eventually produces. Several locale selections and named cultivars circulate in the trade, including 'Esmeralda' — a distinct warocqueanum cultivar recognized for its own specific foliar character — each with their own documented provenance and clone characteristics.

An elevated position is essential — the pendant leaves must hang freely to develop to their full length and display their full character, making a high shelf, hanging basket, or tall climbing support the preferred growing configuration. Provide bright but soft indirect light; harsh direct sun scorches and bleaches the dark velvet surface, but insufficient light reduces leaf size and dulls the venation brilliance over time. This is a species that demands consistency above all else — fluctuations in temperature, humidity, or watering schedule are far more damaging than stable slightly suboptimal conditions. Keep the medium consistently but lightly moist in a very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir with excellent drainage and aeration; root rot from waterlogging is the primary cultivation failure. High humidity of 70-80%+ is non-negotiable for maintaining the velvet surface quality and preventing the leaf edge browning that is the most common symptom of insufficient humidity in this species. Maintain cool to warm temperatures between 60-78°F — warocqueanum is a montane species and appreciates cooler conditions and meaningful day-to-night temperature differential more than most velvet anthuriums, and struggles in consistently hot indoor environments. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.

Why the revisionism?
Format: Paperback
I kinda want to give this a try but I dislike that the artist chose to change Robin's costume. What is this? Dick Grayson Robin always wore the same costume, so why is a "throwback" story using new uniforms? (Batman's is also not quite the original.) I guess modern readers just think the classic togs are "silly," but that's on them. Respect the material, comics creators! Or leave it alone.

Simply magnificent
Format: Kindle
A new perspective on an old and familiar story. The art is outstanding. The story is compelling. It needs to be a regular ongoing series. DC...please handle this. Thanks.

Probably the best thing to come out of the "New 52" reboot
Format: Paperback
In general, I'm not a big fan of the new 52 reboot of the DC universe. On the other hand, it produced this really interesting investigation of the iffy morality and general maladjustment and emotional fallout caused by the "child soldier" issue of the multiple underage vigilantes in the Batman family of comic books. The scripting for this story is excellent, in that it makes clear the broad range of personalities represented by the 4 Robins, Bluebird, Spoiler, and Black Bat (who isn't named as such in this particular story for some reason), and aside from that the art is really gorgeous. I think this may very well be the best thing to come out of the new 52 reboot.

Don't listen to the negative reviews. There is so much to love in this story.
Format: Paperback
First off, I would like to say that this is mostly for people who either A) bought vol1 and want to finish the story, and B) fans of not only Batman, but also the "legacy" that he has left behind him. More on that later. This is the second half of the weekly 26 week story revolving around The former robins, and deals heavily around The Spoiler, Cassandra Cain (batgirl) and Harper Row (bluebird) the main thing I have to say about this story is that it more effectively does what "batman eternal" and "Robin war" we're trying to accomplish. In batman eternal, the story was over 50 issues long, and there were so many times where the story was abysmal because of filler and boring events that made it feel like such a cash grab, and with Robin war, by the end of that story there is almost nothing important that happens, leaving you to feel like you could have went without reading it. Batman and robin eternal not only tells a captivating story, but with important enough events that justify your time and money put into this story. I can whole heartedly recommend this to ANY fan of not only Azrael (very important character in the 90s when knight fall was going on) but also Cassandra Cain (new batgirl up until 2011) and they in my opinion are the highlights of this story because of the justice they are given as comic book characters. We haven't seen them since in the new earth, so it's nice that they got some recognition before rebirth. Hopefully we see them more, but this is also a solid story for the robins as well, each of Batmans pupils gets justice at some point in the story, so I can say a fan of any of them will be pleased. I can say this especially as a Red Hood fan who longs for the day that Jason Tood will finally get a good/solo ongoing series. Now with that said, the art can be inconsistent seeing as how there are more than one of them, and the "big plot twist" shown in this second half can be pretty obvious that "there's more than meets the eye" with the situation, but I rather not give spoilers. Again This book is MORE THAN WORTH YOUR TIME AND MONEY if you Like ANY robin Like Scott Snyders "bluebird" Like the old ninja looking batgirl Like Azrael Like batman stories that don't have batman as the main focus
