Red Tiger Lotus Aquarium Lily (Nymphaea zenkeri) - Aquarium Bulb Plant

The Red Tiger Lotus, also known as Nymphaea zenkeri, is a beautiful aquarium lily that brings bold color and character to freshwater aquariums. Native to Africa, this aquatic plant is admired for its striking arrow-shaped leaves that range from deep red to green with unique speckled patterns. It can grow up to 20 inches tall, making it ideal as a midground or background plant where it can serve as a stunning focal point. Whether grown as a compact dwarf aquarium lily or allowed to send leaves toward the water’s surface, this tiger lotus aquarium plant adds elegance and natural shelter to your aquascape. While most popular in aquariums, this versatile tiger lotus aquarium plant can also be grown in outdoor ponds, where its floating leaves add a natural and decorative touch.

Benefits

  • Creates a stunning focal point with its vibrant red leaves.
  • Provides shade and shelter for fish and shrimp.
  • Helps reduce algae by competing for nutrients.
  • Easy to grow from a red bulb plant, making it beginner-friendly.

Care Guide

Caring for the Red Tiger Lotus Aquarium Lily is simple with the right conditions, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

Light

Moderate to high lighting will bring out the deep red coloration in the leaves. In low light, the plant may stay more green than red.

Temperature

Keep water temperature between 72-82°F for healthy growth.

CO2

CO2 injection is not required, but adding it can encourage faster and more vibrant growth.

Water Parameters

Best in freshwater aquariums with a pH range of 6.5-7.5 and soft to medium hardness.

Growth Rate

The dwarf aquarium lily grows quickly and may send leaves to the surface if not trimmed. Regular pruning keeps it compact and attractive.

Propagation

New plants grow from the bulb. Simply place the aquarium plant bulb halfway into the substrate and wait for shoots to appear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Red Tiger Lotus need CO2?

No, Red Tiger Lotus grows beautifully without CO2 injection. It's a heavy root feeder — a quality root tab near the bulb provides all the nutrition needed. It thrives in low to high light conditions.

How do you plant a Red Tiger Lotus bulb?

Place the bulb on top of the substrate or half-bury it — never fully bury it, as this can cause rot. The bulb will send roots down and shoots up naturally. Add a root tab nearby for faster growth.

Will Red Tiger Lotus take over my tank?

It can grow large (12-18 inch leaves) and send lily pads to the surface. Trim surface leaves regularly and prune outer leaves to control size. Keeping it in a pot or trimming runners prevents spreading.

Exactly what I needed for my bathroom refresh.
Color: B. Rustic Brown - Americana Farmhouse Style, Number Of Shelves: 2, Size: 22.5inches, Color: B. Rustic Brown - Americana Farmhouse Style, Number Of Shelves: 2, Size: 22.5inches
I bought these floating shelves in the color Rustic Brown to replace a bulky storage shelf that was making my bathroom feel cramped, and they completely transformed the space. The wood finish looks much more expensive than I expected, and once installed they gave the bathroom a clean, modern, spa-like feel without taking up visual space. Installation was straightforward overall. I mounted one screw in the center into a stud and used drywall anchors for the remaining hardware, and the shelves feel very sturdy. They sit flush against the wall and don’t sag or wobble. I especially love how slim they are while still being deep enough to hold everyday bathroom items, decor, candles, skincare, and small baskets. The color worked perfectly with my bathroom vanity and mirror trim, and the floating design instantly made the room look more organized and intentional. Huge upgrade for a small space. Definitely recommend if you want functional storage that also looks elevated and minimalist.

Good Shelves
Color: B. Rustic Brown - Americana Farmhouse Style, Number Of Shelves: 3, Size: 22.5inches
These shelves are really nice quality and look as advertised. The hardware included was great quality, metal drywall anchors and good screws. They were easy to install, and make even/level with each other. My only gripe is the price, but I'm very satisfied with the product overall.

Attractive, easy to install, nicely equipped hardware package.
Color: B. Rustic Brown - Americana Farmhouse Style, Number Of Shelves: 2, Size: 22.5inches
These are pretty doggone nice shelves and I appreciate the fact that they are not made of solid particle board. Yes they are made of an engineered product, but they are lightweight and strong…and look better than particle board products and more costly than their actual price. Easy installation system with the bracket…not fussy like some are. An especially thoughtful touch is the variety of hardware that is included. Also a tiny level for use when installing them. What? …So they can be installed correctly? I was pleasantly surprised by this inclusion.
