About Crassula pellucida subsp. marginalis f. rubra
Crassula pellucida subsp. marginalis f. rubra is a highly ornamental succulent cultivar distinguished by its vibrant foliage coloration and trailing growth habit. This perennial variety forms dense mats of heart-shaped leaves that emerge with translucent green centers and intensify to deep ruby-red margins under sufficient light exposure. The prostrate stems exhibit a distinctive reddish-purple pigmentation, creating striking contrast against the foliage. During late winter to early spring, mature specimens produce clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers. Its exceptional color retention and ground-covering properties make it particularly valuable for living mosaics, container spillers, and subtropical rock gardens.
How to Care for Crassula pellucida subsp. marginalis f. rubra
Light: Bright, filtered light with 4-5 hours of direct morning sun optimizes color development while preventing foliar scorch. East-facing exposures or 30% shade cloth in USDA zones 9-11 maintain ideal photoperiod conditions.
Water: Moderate irrigation proves most effective, with thorough watering recommended only after complete substrate drying. During summer dormancy, moisture should be reduced to minimal levels to prevent stem rot.
Temperature: This cultivar thrives within a 55-75°F (13-24°C) range. While tolerating brief exposure to 32°F (0°C) when dry, protection from frost ensures foliage preservation.
Soil & Potting: A porous growing medium containing equal parts organic matter and mineral grit (pumice or perlite) provides optimal root zone conditions. Shallow, wide planters facilitate the spreading growth habit.
Fertilizer: Balanced liquid fertilizer applications at quarter strength every 6 weeks during active growth periods enhance coloration without promoting excessive elongation.
Pests & Disease: Aphids may occasionally infest new growth, though horticultural soap sprays provide effective control. Proper air circulation prevents fungal pathogens in humid conditions.
Propagation: Stem cuttings with 3-4 leaf nodes demonstrate 95% rooting success when planted directly into dry substrate. Root initiation typically occurs within 10-14 days under 65-70°F (18-21°C) conditions.
