Also known as the cucamelon or Mexican cucumber, this charming heirloom produces loads of tiny, oval fruits that look like miniature watermelons. Native to Mexico and Central America, the vigorous, vining plants are incredibly productive, climbing fences or trellises with ease and yielding hundreds of 1–2 inch fruits over the course of the season.
Though not a true cucumber, the flavor of Mexican Sour Gherkins begins mild and cucumber-like before developing a pleasant, tangy bite that makes them irresistible for fresh eating or pickling. Their firm texture and tart finish give them a unique appeal—somewhere between a cucumber and a lime.
A favorite among home gardeners, market growers, and kids alike, these tiny “melon cucumbers” are as fun to grow as they are to eat. Harvests begin about 60–70 days after sowing. Each packet contains a minimum of 25 seeds.
