Dicentra spectabilis (Old-Fashioned Bleeding Heart)
Dicentra spectabilis is a beloved garden classic prized for its romantic, heart-shaped blooms and graceful, arching habit. This long-cherished perennial forms full, bushy clumps of soft, powdery-green foliage on fleshy stems. In late spring, elegant chains of rose-pink flowers with delicate white tips dangle from leafless arching stems, creating an unforgettable display. These blooms are excellent for cutting, lasting up to two weeks in a vase.
With adequate moisture, flowering may extend into early summer. After its spring show, this species typically enters dormancy, but consistent spring watering can delay this until late summer or early fall. Perfect for cottage gardens, shaded borders, and woodland settings, this fast-growing perennial also attracts hummingbirds and bees while remaining reliably deer resistant.
Why it’s a Creekside Champion™:
Chosen for its exceptional spring performance, graceful texture, and timeless garden charm, Dicentra spectabilis offers dependable color in shade, excellent cut flowers, and long-term reliability. Its ease of growth and strong pollinator appeal make it a standout favorite.
