Hosta 'Blue Angel' is one of the very largest blue-leaved hostas available, growing to a mature size of about 36 to 48 inches tall, with a similar width. Grown for its lush foliage, 'Blue Angel' has huge, heart-shaped leaves with a heavy texture, undulating margins, and a wonderful blue tint. From early to late summer, it shoots up showy bell-shaped lavender to white flowers that rise above the foliage on 48-inch scapes. The flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies and look great in mixed floral arrangements.
A Hosta hybrid, commonly called plantain lily or simply hosta, 'Blue Angel' is a hardy, shade-loving perennials suitable for Zones 3-9. Known for its large size and symmetrical, mounding habit, it grows quickly but takes several years to fully mature, returning each year larger and more vibrant. Mass plantings of 'Blue Angel' hostas create a stunning background, while drifts of hostas add movement and texture to garden designs. This versatile plant is also ideal for borders, foundations, and large containers. Its ability to fill in as spring bulb foliage fades makes it invaluable in the garden. 'Blue Angel' hosta is a must-have for woodland settings and looks particularly striking when planted beneath large trees. And since it tolerates air pollution, its ideal for urban gardens.
Low maintenance and easy to grow, 'Blue Angel' hosta thrives in dappled to full shade with rich, moist, and well-draining soil, preferably with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. While tolerant of a range of soil types, it requires consistent moisture and should not be allowed to dry out. Applying slow-release fertilizer annually in spring ensures its lush, healthy appearance.
To plant 'Blue Angel' hosta roots, place them 1½ to 2 inches deep in spring, spacing them 36 to 48 inches apart for a full, thriving display.
