Bring the Tropics indoors with a Short Hair Old Man Palm
The short hair old man palm, scientifically known as Coccothrinax crinita, is a small and beautiful palm tree native to Cuba. It forms dense groves in windblown scrub on sandy soils along the coastline. This palm has a slender trunk and an open crown. It is also referred to as "Short Hair" Old Man Palm due to its shorter and less dense leaf sheath fibers covering the trunk.
Here are some key features of the short hair old man palm:
The trunk of this palm is slim, only about 8 inches in diameter, but appears larger due to the thick hair covering.
Leaf Characteristics: The palmate leaves are dark green and fan-shaped, giving it an attractive appearance.
Growth Habits: It is a solitary palm that grows well in full sun and prefers regularly moist soil, although it is adaptable to drought conditions. It can also tolerate moderate salt levels.
Size: Younger specimens of the short hair old man palm display the "short hair" characteristic, which refers to the smaller size of the seed and the less developed trunk.
Habitat: This palm thrives in sandy soils and can be found along the coastlines of Cuba.
The short hair old man palm is considered a unique and sought-after species in the palm enthusiast community. Its unique features and beautiful appearance make it a desirable addition to gardens and landscapes.
