(Acer negundo) Perennial. Hardy to zone 2. Native range—Central to Eastern USA & Canada.
Acer (Maple) Family. Also known as Ash-Winged Maple or Box Elder, a fast growing and highly adaptable tree. Most commonly found along streams or river beds, but highly adaptable to various conditions.
Unlike other maples due to its irregular growth habit, compound leaves and weak wood that is easily broken in storms. Prized for its quick growth in challenging conditions, especially for creating fast shade. Leaves turn yellow in the Fall. Manitoba Maples can grow 30-50 feet tall. Can be considered invasive in some conditions due to its easy spread and rapid growth.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
For best results, sow seeds outdoors in the Fall, mulch beds (remove mulch once seeds germinate in Spring). If starting indoors...
SEED PRETREATMENT: Seeds benefit from scarification—gently scratch the seed surface with fine sandpaper or nick with a pin. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours. Then, mix seeds with moistened soil 4x seed volume. Place in a plastic bag.
STRATIFICATION: 90 days cold/moist (5°C). Place plastic bag with seeds and soil in your fridge. Inspect periodically for even moisture, don’t let seeds dry out during stratification period.
POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds 3/8” deep. Alternating soil temperatures during the day (warmer than 20 °C) and night (cooler than 20°C) can help germination. Water evenly.
GERMINATION: When all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, germination generally occurs in 60-90 days.
