Sometimes known as 'piquín', the Pequin pepper is a wild-type chili native to southern Mexico. Its small peppers seldom exceed one inch in length, but pack a fiesty punch, averaging around 30,000-60,000 Scoville, or several times the heat of a jalapeno. The small chilis, known as chile pequin, are frequently dried and used for seasoning, but may also be used fresh in salsa.
Pequin pepper plants grow roughly 2 to 3-feet-tall and are highly branched with small leaves. What the pequin peppers lack in size, they more than make up for in productivity. It is not unusual for a single plant to produce hundreds of peppers in a single season. Overall, this is a productive and fun-to-grow variety for gardeners and chili lovers alike. Matures approximately 90-100 days after transplant. Each packet contains a minimum of 25 seeds.
