Its long, cascading vines are strung with small, plump, banana-shaped leaves in a vivid translucent green — each one curved and glossy, creating a playful, tropical cascade that looks stunning from a hanging basket or trailing over a shelf edge. Good for beginners? Yes. String of Bananas is one of the most forgiving trailing succulents you can own. It stores water in its plump leaves, tolerates periods of neglect, and grows fast enough to stay interesting.
Safe for cats and dogs? String of Bananas is considered mildly toxic to pets if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
Light needs: Bright indirect light to some direct morning sun produces the fastest growth and the most plump, healthy leaves. Insufficient light causes the stems to stretch and the leaves to become smaller and more spaced out.
Care at a glance: Water when the soil is completely dry. As a succulent it stores water in its leaves and strongly prefers underwatering to overwatering. Use well-draining soil. Feed monthly in spring and summer. Let vines trail freely for maximum visual impact.
