The Birdhouse gourd, as bottle gourd, is a classic heirloom variety long prized for its versatility and charm. Vigorous 15 to 35-foot vines produce pale green fruit with rounded necks and bulbous bottoms, typically reaching 14 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide—perfectly shaped for crafting birdhouses, bowls, and pitchers.
This easy-to-grow and highly productive variety is as fun as it is useful. We especially enjoy growing Birdhouse gourds for craft projects—letting the kids paint them in bright colors, drilling a simple entrance hole, and hanging them from the oak tree that canopies our old farmhouse. Over the years, they’ve been happily claimed by chickadees, wrens, and sparrows alike. Approximately 110 days to harvest. 25 seeds per packet.
