Snake Plants are excellent easy houseplants. Flexible with light level, low on water needs and generally not fussy, choose this plant as a gift for a plant novice or to start your own houseplant journey. This cultivar has horizontal, zebra-like deep green and silver stripes with flashes of golden variegation around the leaf edges, so it's a perfect easy way to bring in a bit of colour to your home. Each leaf grows straight upwards from the ground, and the plant will keep adding more leaves until it's filled the pot, so if you want dense greenery that needs little maintenance, the Snake Plant is an excellent go-to.

Scientific Name
Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Golden Hahnii’ (triple-banded San Severo plant, cultivar: golden Hahn's)

Synonyms: Dracaena trifasciata (accepted scientific name)

This plant has changed genus; it's now part of the Dracaena Genus, and its scientific name is Dracaena trifasciata

Common Name(s)
Variegated Snake Plant, Bird's Nest Snake Plant, Golden Bird's Nest, Mother-in-Law's Tongue, Devil's Tongue, Snake Tongue, St. George's Sword

Origin
Native to Central and West Africa, this plant grows naturally in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Gabon, Tanzania and the DRC.

Light
Snake plants are hugely flexible with lighting, as the positioning of their leaves allows them to maximise any light. While they can survive even in the dimmest of rooms, they will thrive best in bright, indirect light. You can even place them in direct sun as long as you let them build a tolerance gradually!

Water
Allow the soil to totally dry out between waters. Be especially careful if your Snake Plant is in a darker spot as it will need much less frequent watering there than on a sunny windowsill. Perfect if you're forgetful with watering!

Humidity
Low humidity is ideal for Snake Plants, though an occasional hose down to keep the leaves dust-free will be appreciated. Just make sure they thoroughly dry out afterwards!

Soil
Use a well-draining soil; a blend for cacti and succulents (with sand and grit) would work well here. For an extra boost you can mix in bark as well which the plant will appreciate! Repot every three years in Spring as the plant grows. It doesn't mind being pot-bound for a while but will put out more new growth when it has more space!

Food
Feed every two months using a diluted fertiliser; one designed for cacti or just for houseplants generally will work fine. Make sure to water first to avoid burning the plant's roots.

Temperature
Temperatures of about 12-32°C are great; make sure it doesn't drop below 10°C in winter.

Pet-safe
No, this plant is toxic to pets and small humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
Snake Plants are great at growing in a variety of light levels, but make sure you tailor both your expectations and your watering schedule to the light level. You will need to water more in a bright location, and the plant will probably grow better too; in a dimmer location, water less and expect slower growth! In lower light you may also see less variegation, especially on newer growth, so if you want to keep all that lovely colour it may need moving to a slightly brighter spot.

Did You Know?
Snake Plants are often celebrated as a good luck symbol, and are believed to be good for Feng Shui, warding off negative energy and improving harmony.

Not for strong chewers
Size: Medium/Large, Color: Dog Ness Monster - Large
Initially, I really liked this for my dog. She is about 8 months old and still loves to chew and destroys most toys in a few minutes. When we got this, it seemed like it would hold up for a while despite being clearly gnawed on. Unfortunately, once she focused on the softer "water" portion of the toy, that is where things went downhill with this toy. After a few short chew sessions, she was tearing chunks out of it. We had purchased a replacement since she liked the original so much, and after about 5 minutes with the replacement, she had taken enough out of the blue section that we immediately threw that one out as well. Overall while the green portion held up, the blue didn't. I can't recommend this for strong chewers.

Definitely not indestructable
Size: Medium/Large, Color: Dog Ness Monster - Large, Size: Medium/Large, Color: Dog Ness Monster - Large
I have a 1-year-old toy fox terrier (Rocky, pictured). He has been chewing on this toy for seven months now; it is one of his favorites. He has been unable to seriously damage the "ocean" portion of this toy, but as you can see from the provided image, the sea serpent has not faired that well. It is missing its snout and smaller portions of the humps. My guess is that the advertiser images showing much larger dogs with "like new" versions of the toy are just that...NEW AND UNCHEWED. I have not had to clean up bits of this toy from my floor, so I assume Rocky has been swallowing them. My hope is that the yellow material of the serpent is not chemically dangerous when exposed to digestive fluids. Rocky easily destroys plush toys in a matter of days if not hours and, consumed pieces of a small microfiber blanket that he liked to toss around and play tug-of-war with (past tense as he destroyed it and has since been trashed after I began finding feces-stained undigested pieces of it lying around). Since this toy has survived seven months and has remained recognizable, I have to agree it is durable. Just beware, if my small toy fox terrier can damage the toy as pictured, expect your large breed chewer to do similar or worse damage. Also, the toy is very heavy! When Rocky drops it down a flight of stairs, it makes a MAJOR thud at the bottom, and sometimes makes me wonder if it might crack the large tile at the bottom. I cautiously recommend the product. Note the yellow frisbee in Rocky's picture. It is only a few months old and surprisingly has not suffered any chew damage despite substantial abuse. It appears to bend in the wind like a proverbial reed, evading damage by yielding to pressure.

Dog loves it! For tough chewers for sure
Size: Medium/Large, Color: Dog Ness Monster - Large, Size: Medium/Large, Color: Dog Ness Monster - Large
Dog absolutely loves it, he’s super rough on all of his toys they usually last about 10 minutes bore they are torn to shreds. It’s lasting through his chewing so I’m happy. It’s also super cute.

Cute toy, dog really likes it. I had my doubts when I pulled it out, and honestly so did she, but the soft part bounces, so that got her going. We've had it for about a week. My dog is ~70 lbs and a moderate chewer, and this monster still gets regular play and is holding up well.
